My TV-series killing curse has struck again, humorously enough for the show "Killer Women".

See, I've been meaning to recommend this show for a couple of weeks now. It's not a great show by any means, or probably even a good show. But I found it really entertaining for several reasons.

Let me explain. )

But here is where this show grabbed my attentions: there are women EVERYWHERE in it. Moms, daughters, trophy wives, cops, soldiers, white collars, blue collars...This is not your regular procedural where there's the token woman or two on The Team, who may stumble across a female nosy neighbor or hooker. Two of the exec producers are Sofia Vergara and Hannah Shakespeare, and it felt like their mandate was cram all in the women in it they could. With the Texas setting, a fair portion of the women are Latina as well.

Helfer's Texas accent can be laughable, and the dialogue and stories are sometimes atrocious and cliched, but women! Women with agency! With their own stories and lives all over the place! Surrounded by men who don't blink an eye at the strong women in their lives.

Men being dudes and not dudebros )

So of course I find out after watching this week's episode that the series had its 8 episode run shortened to 6, leaving it mid-cliffhanger and canceled. (Which explains the "Previously on" clips that never actually aired.)

I need to stop watching TV shows in their first season. Why do I never learn? (By the way, Sleepy Hollow/Person of Interest/Teen Wolf/Fringe/etc. fans, you're welcome - I specifically steered clear to keep them safe.)

So tell me: are there any new shows that need killing? I've got an opening now.

Heh. Lots of things bouncing around in this here grey matter.

I want many of these T-shirts, especially the aliens and the Pyramids, and the Discworld one, and...

A [livejournal.com profile] 14valentines entry here listed a bunch of Faith (from "Buffy") and Dean (from "Supernatural") fics and vids, and sweet holy bejeebus, do I have a new kink. Hot like hellfire doesn't begin to describe it. Where have I been all these years? Following (as I do) down the rabbit hole (or rather, link to link to link), I stumbled across Wildcat as well, which is Dean/Sam/F (where I'm pretty sure I've spoiled who F is), and WHOA NELLY. Major distraction. (I don't even WATCH Supernatural, but c'mon. Jensen Ackles is too damned pretty to resist.)

For those of us who have been bad pet parents, Advantage is sponsoring an awesome deal where if you can score one of their online vouchers and then take your pet to the vet sometime between now and May 31st, they'll reimburse you up to $20. Warning: it took me several tries to get a voucher. I had to be ready to click right at the beginning of an hour, as their counter resets then.

[livejournal.com profile] miniglik is currently smitten with Legend of the Seeker, and based on her posts and the screencaps here, I am so, so tempted. But the books it's based on? Yeah, it's Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth, a series that I tried really hard to slog through, and I made it about four or five books in before I had to give up. Thus, I dither.

Eek! Quitting time. Later!

Oh, one more thing: my list of vid ideas is now at 100 entries. Anyone got a pocket dimension I can nip into for a year or so to get these out of my system, and return home without time having passed?

I managed to get the hamster ball pointed somewhat straight today and made some progress on the project at work. However, I am still trailing way behind where I should be, and with tomorrow being Friday...Yeah. *sigh*

But hey! I'm keeping up with my flist, and that's really really important, right? Right?

[livejournal.com profile] oxoniensis_recs linked a delightful story today, a SPN/Pushing Daisies crossover that doesn't really require much background knowledge of either show, IMO at least, other than their basic premises. If you love either, and/or if you love pie in its infinite varieties (think "Waitress"), then you'll probably enjoy Coeur d'coeurs. It's Dean and Sam, having given up their Hunter calling, taking over Ned's Pie Hole. It's a warm, contented story for a dreary "will this winter never end?" kind of day.

It also reminded me how much I miss "Pushing Daisies". ABC can go fuck themselves sideways for being snippy brats and not showing the last three episodes. I mean, come ON, guys -- you already canceled the show. The least you can do is let us have the end of it.

A while back, the gracious and talented [livejournal.com profile] ivorygates posted her Not a 'Waterloo' mix, a song list for her gorgeously aching love story Waterloo Bridge, an SG-1 AU with a gender-flipped Daniel Jackson. We got into something of a discussion about other compatible songs. There may have been subliminal coercion going on, because before I knew it, I got infected with the urge to create a collection myself.

The following would be the result.

I've been fussing, rearranging, and cutting for a bit now, and I think I must call it done before I fall into a state of endless dithering.

Explanations and prevarications )

Of course, this is dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] ivorygates, for all the hours I've spent blissfully lost in your work. I ran out of marble for your temple, so this will have to do instead.

Music ahoy! )

One of the features that I positively adore about Firefox 3.0 is the "Save open tabs when you close" option. Before, if I had a bunch of tabs dangling at quitting time, I had to bookmark them all and get back to them later. Now, I just shut down and they pop up again the next time I start Firefox. Fabulous.

So, here are some of the tabs I've had open that I wanted to pass along:

From everybody: Mighty God King posts re-titled sci-fi and fantasy epics from his adolescence, part one and part two. I can't decide which is scarier: that I've read most of these and can recognize them all, or that even as I'm giggling at the snark, I'd still go back and read several of them again. But only a few of them, as it's startling how much fanfic has spoiled me for good writing, characterization, and skill.

ETA: Oops. It appears he's gotten overloaded and/or suspended. Well, check back later.

Speaking of good fanfic, [livejournal.com profile] seperis recommended this phenomenal piece by [livejournal.com profile] dsudis, Get Loved, Make More, Try to Stay Alive . It's a Torchwood story, Jack/Ianto. With mpreg. (For those of you who have no idea what that is, it's short for male pregnancy.) Now, before you recoil in horror, it's only 19% mpreg (claims the author), and it's actually feasible. But beyond that, it's an incredible love story, with time traveling and tech and dead-on representations of Torchwood and Doctor Who characters. It's long and wonderful and I felt sad at the end that there wasn't more to read, because it's an astounding piece of work.

Oh, and today's a Woot-off, too. Anyone snag a BoC yet?

Happy Wednesday!

I went to see a movie yesterday! Whereupon our heroine views a film and expounds at some length about it. )

In conclusion (and wow, this kind of length is why I don’t do much commentary), I firmly liked "Sweeney Todd". I wouldn’t say it was the greatest film ever and that you must drop everything and go see it, but if you’re not too squeamish, appreciate musicals and/or the oddness of Tim Burton and his merry madmen and women, then you may very well enjoy this movie, too.

I've been gobbling up the back entries of this delightful LJer [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon to catch all of her stories about the McKay/Sheppard characters from "Stargate: Atlantis" (but set in an AU), and I came across this post about Women in Academia, which made me think of my favorite academic.

(To everyone else who likes fanfic? Go give her Farm in Iowa series a try, even if you're not familiar with SG:A. So beautiful.)
