I've reached critical mass on links I feel need to be shared. (Hat tip to [personal profile] karmageddon, [personal profile] siria, and [personal profile] umadoshi, and anyone else I've filched these from.)

Remember that massive Metafilter thread on emotional labor? Olivia K. Lima posted a PDF putting it all together. (Very long - it will eat lots of time reading through it.)

Did you know that HP laptops may be logging every keystroke? Yikes!

It's a little bit woo, but also great food for thought: 5 Self-Care Strategies That Aren’t Fucking Mani-Pedis

It's probably not news that conservative voters have an irrational attachment to the just world hypothesis. I wish this article had actual advice to counteract it, but just calling it out is a step in the right direction: The 'pro-life' party has become the party of death: New research on why Republicans hate poor and sick people

"The Snarling Girl" By Elisa Albert, Notes on—and against—ambition. I feel like I could spend hours trying to unravel all the emotions and realizations that this essay prompted in me. I am not ambitious at all, but I have a dim recollection of maybe feeling that way when I was younger. Where did it go? Do I miss that feeling? So much to chew on.

For a palate cleanser, have a goofy animation of the history of the world.

Similarly, Chris Evans reads a kids' book about superheroes. Bless that soft bro loaf.

Technically, the PA said "Let's treat this like bronchitis." So I'm on a five-day antibiotics regimen, with a tussin/codeine syrup for bedtime. I only woke up coughing twice last night, instead of 4+. :|

I am worn out. Work has been nice and quiet; my most difficult task has been staying awake. At least coughing is good for that!

Sorry for complaining so much. Have some cheerful links! (Thanks to [personal profile] umadoshi and [personal profile] misbegotten for posting them.)

33 signs from the Women's March [Buzzfeed]. My favorites include "So bad, even introverts are here.", "If I wanted politics in my vagina, I'd fuck a Senator.", and "Super Callous Fragile Racist Sexist Nazi POTUS".

In the magical land of Australia, even SyFy is better. Check out SyFy Australia hosting BSG's Jamie Bamber and Tahmoh Penikett talking about early fan reactions to their characters, or the WH13 gang's favorite moments. (There are a bunch more links for each group in the sidebar.)

Vidding peeps, help me out - I need to replace my home laptop, and Woot has an HP ZBook 17-G1 Mobile Workstation for $1000. I can't find many reviews for it online, which makes me leery, but it seems like a really good deal. Any thoughts?

I am so disappointed that I missed the Kickstarter for this Notable Women in Computing card deck, because it looks phenomenal. That post in particular kicked me in my feminist feels, as the traditional use of queens in the deck is one of those things that bugged me as a kid, but I got desensitized to it over the years. It's yet another "traditional" demotion women are expected to suck up for the sake of history.

Today is going so slow, and honestly, I am fine with that. I am catching up on my email and infinity tabs (when so many links are open they spill off the top of the browser).

So have some interesting flotsam!

JK Rowlings is writing Quidditch World Cup updates on Pottermore? Man, I am out of the loop.

Colorado, hotbed of healthy economic and civic progress, all thanks to pot. Can we pleeeease legalize weed already? This is getting embarrassing.

The A.V. Club is doing a Farscape watch. They're up to halfway through season 3. Me, I can never get enough of people gushing on how amazing My Show is.

See Every Major Marvel Character’s Hometown In One Map. Marvel + maps? YES PLEASE.

There are several aspects of Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" that I actually enjoy, like the thumping base line and the funky beat. His performance and lyrics, though, leave me wanting to bathe in hand sanitizer. Thanks to a link by [personal profile] cereta, I now have not one but two delightful options done by women! BRB, watching those again.

What are you all up to today?

That somewhere, anywhere, on the internet, the answer to your question can be found.

Exhibit A: Wondering what I'm missing with a recent XKCD, Magic Words:

Then stumbling across an exquisitely thorough explanation, and in fact an entire website devoted to such information, Explain XKCD.

Though now that I think about, the intersection of word nerdery, humor, and linguistic information imparted was rather delightful in a, well, satisfying way. Perhaps it was a bit of Rule 34 after all.

Humble Bundle is offering a huge deal on electronic copies of Doctor Who comics. You get a bunch of collected works and an Android game.

There are 11 more days in the sale, so you've got plenty of time to take a look.

I've been trying to pay more attention to my Facebook feed, as that's the way I find out most of the news about non-fandom friends.

So it was that I found out about Joseph Gordon-Levitt producing an upcoming film adaptation of Sandman. I have no idea what to think about that; if I remember correctly, they've been trying to adapt that beast for years and years in one way or another. I'd love to see it as an HBO mini- or full series, honestly, if it's going to be made at all, but I suppose that I trust JGL as enough of a fandom-friendly guy that he might actually get it right. It doesn't hurt that Neil Gaiman is also on board, and he's probably less likely to have a hissy fit and stomp away than Alan Moore was with his various projects.

I also loved this fangirl version of Jingle Bells. Let's see if I can imbed this:

Brain drain

With as slow as my work has been, I fear that I'm losing the ability to focus on a project. My current assignment is someone else's personal grudge framed as a request, as a particular department has developed a bad habit of wanting frequent little changes at the last minute, with no repercussions for their delays even as they put pressure on us. It's an interesting challenge for me, but there's not really a sense of urgency about it, so my brain refuses to commit to concentrating on it. *sigh*

In other news, I think I may be developing a small Kickstarter habit. First there was the Veronica Mars movie, then the "Fight Like a Girl" anthology. I recently backed Jill Thompson's project to fund the production of a Scary Godmother doll, because she's an amazing artist I've loved for years (Delirium has always been one of my favorite comic book characters) and her Scary Godmother specials are a treat at Halloween.

Kudoscon, a convention devoted to fanworks looks terrifically interesting, too, but alas, I don't think they're going to make their goal, as it only has a couple of hours left. I don't know why they fell short; maybe the location in Minnesota dissuaded people? Or too many new cons have failed or fallen apart? It's sad, and I hope they try again.

Another distraction has been the offerings at [community profile] eleventyfest. Who could work with those open in a tab? :)

Hm. Maybe I need to pomodoro this assignment to get myself going. Once more into the breach!

When it comes to acquiring new tech, I am a cheap adapter, meaning that I'm not rushing to buy something unless I can get an extremely good deal on it. (I got an Eee PC several years ago on super-sale at Amazon.)

Today on Deals.Woot, someone posted a deal for a 40% off coupon code KINDLE40 on basic Kindles, the 6" E Ink Display and the Special Offers version, provided you have or sign up for the Amazon Rewards Visa card.

Since I signed up for the card tonight, I got a $50 voucher, which made the Kindle effectively free. (Thus the asterisk.) Go me! Now, here's hoping that it's as easy to put PDFs on it as random searches have made it seem, and that I can low-effort jailbreak it if the ads get annoying.

Also on today's Deals.Woot:

40 My Coke Rewards points

50 free Microsoft ebooks

I am such a dumbass. The amazingly talented [livejournal.com profile] ivorygates sent me a vgift for New Year's, and it took me until now to notice. Thank you! I have no idea what I did to merit this, but I love it all the same.

Scottish Wikipedia. With dialect and everything. I can't begin to say how much this delights me.

Last night, after his bed time, the Emperor called me upstairs just to say that he loved me. Well, and to ask to go to sleep in my bed, but anyway... I'm still a puddle of mush every time he says it unprompted.

God bless the internet, and LJ in particular, making it easier than ever to stalkkeep up on your favorite authors...

Hi, my name is Kim, and I like to read, in the way that most people like to breathe. )
I think I have to stop now, as my brain is full. Feel free to chime in with authors I've missed.

So my good friend [livejournal.com profile] herbivorous posted this delicious picture of Nathan Fillion in a kilt. *phew* So I had to go googling to see if there were more yummy poses. Not only did I come across this entertaining quote (from here):

"The good folks at Universal invited me to the premiere of In Good Company after I’d finished working on Serenity and I wore a kilt on a dare because a friend said I’d never wear a kilt [to a premiere] so I said "to Hell with you!" and I wore it. It was very nice too. A very snappy, dressy kilt."

I also came across this site, which, yeah, Alan Rickman, David Tennant, and Vin Diesel (among others). In Kilts.

If, you know, you're into that sort of thing. *whistling*

ETA: D'oh! I'm a dumbass -- I didn't notice that [livejournal.com profile] herbivorous's link was flocked. Here's the picture under review (scroll down to the second post).

It seems that I've been saving up links for other people for a while, storing them in my "Stuff to Read" folder until I actually get around to posting them. Oddly enough, most of them seem to be for [livejournal.com profile] resolute.

And away we go... )

Whew. Now I can get on with other lingering tasks, like writing up something for my experiences at Wiscon. (Now only two months late!)

I've been gobbling up the back entries of this delightful LJer [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon to catch all of her stories about the McKay/Sheppard characters from "Stargate: Atlantis" (but set in an AU), and I came across this post about Women in Academia, which made me think of my favorite academic.

(To everyone else who likes fanfic? Go give her Farm in Iowa series a try, even if you're not familiar with SG:A. So beautiful.)
