Summary: This place's about to blow.

Notes: A Club Vivid entry for Vividcon 2018.

For the last Vividcon, I went back to my vidding roots and made a Farscape vid, for My Show, the show of my heart. As I said when I first started babbling about making this: Has this song been used in a bajillion vids? Yes, even a older Farscape one on Youtube! Are there any other danceable songs about being crazy + explosions + underpants? Not that I could find!

Or rather, the store took back the lousy peaches and gave me store credit, which was more than fine with me. I still want peaches, though; perhaps the farmer's market tomorrow will have some.

5 days until I leave for VVC. So much prep work to do! I have a character in mind for a cosplay, with variations on an outfit, so I'll have to see what the local thrift stores can do for me. And the baking plans are getting a little out of control...10 different kinds of cookies/sweet treats is excessive, yes? But they all look so good!

Tonight I binged all three eps of the current season of Killjoys and OMG MORE NOW PLEASE. This show! Oh, this show delights nearly every corner of my fannish heart. The only thing it's missing is Claudia Black and Ben Browder as an old married mercenary couple, and then it would be perfection. (Get on that, showrunners.)

But now it's late, and tomorrow I can sleep. (Do you hear that, body? SLEEP. Not wake up in a panic at ass-crack o'clock. Please.)

Right off the bat, I should tell you that Farscape is The Show of My Heart: my favorite, my baby, the one that I will always tell people to watch (with caveats, yes, but everyone should give Farscape a try), and even enticed several people into getting sucked in by showing up at their house with DVDs. So brace yourself for rambles and tangents about my entanglement with this show.

Farscape premiered on the Sci-Fi channel in the US 19 years and a day ago, on March 19, 1999. Fahrbot fangirling )

Basically, I've been thinking a lot about Farscape lately (the anniversary was completely a coincidence), stoked by listening to the thoughtful offerings from Farscape Friday Podcast (also a DW comm). When that crossed streams with the looming awareness of the last Vividcon, and wanting to make a Club Vivid entry, it dawned on me that DUH, I should make a Farscape vid. My very first vid was for Farscape, after all (oh, bb!grammarwoman, how far you've come!). I want to make the prettiest version I can, so I dug into some research for the quality of the DVDs versus the Blu-rays, which resulted in a definite *shrug*. I wound up buying my third copy of the series to get it on Blu-ray (when in doubt, I vote with my money to show my support, even if the chances of any revivals are pretty much dead), then realized that my new laptop doesn't actually have a Blu-ray drive. Oops! So I cashed in some survey points for gift cards and picked up an external drive for a reasonable sum.

I'm already a couple of episodes into the second season (and loving the subtitles and extras on the Blu-rays - yay, post-purchase vindication!) and appreciating the show for the umpteenth time. But I'm also struggling with watching bad things happen to my people all over again, and it's HARD. I want them to be safe and happy, which makes it difficult to properly welcome the stellar villains and antagonists as they appear. (I have complicated feelings about Scorpius, let me tell you!) Plus there's the usual pressure of translating the awesome vid in my head to clips on the timeline, compounded with the nagging doubts of my music choice. (Has this song been used in a bajillion vids? Yes, even a older Farscape one on Youtube! Are there any other danceable songs about being crazy + explosions + underpants? Not that I could find!) (Seriously, if you know of multiple songs in the center of that Venn diagram, PLEASE let me know.) Plus plus, clipping Blu-rays of a TV series is A PAIN IN MY POSTERIOR. Guh. Is there a Blu-ray ripping program that is as easy to use as DVD Shrink? Because I may just give up and go back to the DVDs for the negligible quality gains.

In conclusion: Farscape!

Summary: A multifandom manifesto of shipping.

WARNING: Suggests incest, adult-underage attraction, and non-canonical pairings, plus really fuzzy clips from YouTube.

Notes: This vid is direct from my id. I would apologize for that and the contents of the warnings, but as the lyrics say, "I don’t care, I ship it." And lo, a Club Vivid entry was born. (I am addicted to the Doppler effect of "Woo!"s rippling through the Club Vivid crowd, as people recognize and cheer for their favorites.) If you can't air out your dirty laundry for fans to dance their butts off to, then what good is fandom?

Fandom, bless them, is also good for doing your homework for you and helpfully listing episode lists of, say, two siblings hugging, or a pair of Very Special Agents standing super close together.

[personal profile] heresluck, thank you for laughing at me and my continued insistence on building multi-source vids and my unsubtle affection for Chris Evans; the encouragement is appreciated, too. :) My gratitude also goes out to all the fan writers who tempted me down dark paths; bless you and your ranges of pairings, from the all-but-canonical to utter crack.

Summary: The Empire would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn't been for those meddling Rebels and incompetent Imperial officers.

A Vividcon Auction vid for [personal profile] beatrice_otter.

Notes: It seemed like a good idea at the time to offer up my services for the Vividcon Auction, seeing as that annual collection of fanpeople has made me so happy and been inspiring me for many years. Then I got hit with the panic of "OMG I'm making a vid for someone FOR MONEY. What if they HATE IT? AAGGGHHH!"

I was talked down off the ledge by many people, and then [personal profile] beatrice_otter graciously bid a very generous amount on me so I could fulfill her long-desired dreams of an Imperial vid set to Stephen Foster's Civil War Song "That's What's the Matter". We back-and-forthed quite a bit as I built the vid; I'm pretty sure she likes the result. Certainly lots of people enjoyed it on the big screen at Vividcon, so I'm good with the reception. :) It was a very popular year for Star Wars, but it fit especially well for me, as I got to match General Leia with a whole verse about her as a General, AND cosplay her at Club Vivid. Win-win!

[personal profile] heresluck in particular gave me great support, so thank you, my dear!

I squeezed in just about every darned thing I had on my to-do list (party prep, Vividcon, party prep -> party, Club Vivid, Vividcon, VVC clean-up, post-party packup at the parents'), and now I am home for the first time since Tuesday. No matricide, lots of gratitude, I got out of the party and back in time for my Club Vivid entry, so that was awesome. It was an amazing whirlwind of a week. I may do a write-up later, but right now I am beyond exhausted and well into glazed like a donut. I may poke at the internet for a bit for as long as words make sense. Braining is hard, yo.

I feel like the fabulosity of "Wonder Woman" was a reward for other things going on.

I am not ready for it to be summer! I feel like I barely got to enjoy spring; all the spring flowers are crunchy brown and the weather zoomed right into hot and humid, blech. But dropping my son off at day camp this morning pretty firmly cemented the change in seasons.

I'm in a temporary slow period with my job, plus I was working from home last week due to the gap between the Emperor's school ending and camp starting, so Friday I reluctantly tackled some phone calls I'd been putting off.

I made three Festivids!

The Pirates of Penzance:
Rock This Town, PG. DW, LJ, AO3. The Pirates of Penzance are gonna rock this town.

RPF - Chris Hadfield:
Satellite, G. DW, LJ, AO3. These are the voyages of Col. Chris Hadfield, Canadian astronaut, science educator, and generally cool dude.

Spy:
Level Up, NSFW. DW, LJ, AO3. Susan Cooper: Analyst. Secret agent. BADASS.

I am very happy with how they were received. I am super relieved that they're finished. Well, all except replying to the comments, which at this point is a crapshoot at being done.

I thought about signing up for [community profile] equinox_exchange, but I was just a little burned out at that point. I think, though, my vidding well is sufficiently full again to make nefarious plans about that glorious time of year - VIVIDCON! For starters, I have a couple of ideas for Club Vivid that I need to mull over and get approved.

However! This year, I am also seriously pondering offering my services for the Auction, because every little bit helps. Buuuuuut, my anxieties about my abilities are rearing their ugly little weasel heads, so I'm flopping back and forth, and could really use some reassurance. Someone out there would pay twenty bucks for a vid from me, right? Right? And someone else out there would perhaps cheerlead or beta my efforts, yes?

UGH, brain, why you gotta be so mean?

Title: Star Work
Source: Star Wars (Episodes I-VII)
Music: "Work Bitch", Britney Spears
Vid Download Link: 119 MB at Sendspace

AO3 link here.

Summary: Star Wars bitches get shit done.

Premiered at Club Vivid, 2016.

Notes: This song sucked me in the first time I heard it; there are at least four entries in my vid ideas list with this as the soundtrack. The one that really stuck with me, though, was an ode to space princesses, and after seeing "SW: The Force Awakens", it had to be about my favorite Star Wars ladies. Plus, once it occurred to me how well "Look hot in a bikini" and "Go call the governor" fit, I just had to do it.

Of course, making this meant rewatching Episodes 4-6 (still awesome) and Episodes 1-3 (ARGH ARGH ARGH still awful), plus all the extras to get just a little bit more of Padme being HBIC and not a razzer-frazzer damsel (or damnnsel, which is what my fingers typed the first time). There was much yelling at the TV, especially for choice tidbits like Lucas' proud statement of the fact that he's more of a technical director than a character one. (No shit, George!) I dithered for a while about tinkering with the song to give a verse or even a couple extra lines for Rey's section, but I talked myself out of it since Rey has only one movie so far to the other ladies' three apiece.

When I put out the call asking for a beta's eyes on this, [livejournal.com profile] sabaceanbabe rose to the challenge, pushing me to include more General Organa and tweak some other moments. Thank you so much, my dear!

Work Bitch Lyrics: )
grammarwoman: (Default)
I'm not officially off work until tomorrow, but UGH I am fighting off slipping into vacation mode right now, and losing. I've got 10 tabs open of recipes I want to bake for the VVC con suite (self, you have less than 2 days to do it all, STOP IT), and my mind is flitting all over the place with details.

Competing for brain space are:

1) The long-awaited sewer line replacement is FINALLY happening. I don't have a lot of faith in this company, considering they've been stringing me along for months, and couldn't even dig in the right spot yesterday (a foot or so off), but I just want it done already. I had big plans for getting stuff checked off my todo list this weekend, until I got an email from the company saying we were responsible for opening up access to the backyard. I had to spend most of Sunday clearing the side beds, then helping the husband fight with the fence to swing it out of the way to let them bring in their equipment. Hopefully they can wrap everything up today. If they interfere with my baking plans tomorrow, I will get angry.

2) I want another dog like you wouldn't believe, but I have to wait until the sewer line mess is done. It's been a freaking year, and I still tear up about with how much I miss my sweet fuzzy girl.

3) The Emperor's school starts next week. Registration and supplies shopping is done (though he still needs new shoes), and we have school orientation Thursday during which I hope to ask a bazillion questions, starting with who his IEP support people are, because I am beyond tired of going months into the school year with no info. I am terrified about how this year is going to go; middle school is a trial by fire of executive function, and I'm anticipating that my ADHD/ASD boy is going to have a very hard time of it. This transition is exactly why I've fought so hard to keep his IEP in place, so here's hoping the school has its act together when it comes to support.

4) Family medical TMI grossness )

5) My minivan needs to go into the shop at some point. Since I'm driving my husband's car to VVC, I really hope the van doesn't break down on him while I'm gone. (There's also a simmering resentment that my husband moaned for months about how he had to get his oil changed, but couldn't be bothered to get it done even when he had a bonus day off work. I got it done on MY day off so it would be ready to go. ARGH.)

6) The house is a pit. I keep fighting the clutter and losing. My Saturday morning garage sale addiction isn't helping.

7) I have so much left to do for VVC prep, including making a Club Vivid outfit, doing some last-minute edits on my CVV entry and getting it ready for posting, the afore-mentioned baking, and PACKING UGH. I am bringing all the booze, and it's going to be wine o'clock as soon as my stuff makes it to the hotel room.

Wish me luck in making it to Thursday night with my sanity intact!

After a looooong time working on it, my Star Wars Club Vivid entry is just about ready for submission! (OK, subjectively it felt like a long time, as the folder says it's been over a month, as do the programs stacked up on my DVR.) One or two more tweaks and it will be good to go for tomorrow night's deadline. PHEW.

I can't wait to dance to this in a crowd of fans. :)

Hello, my fandom friends! Would any of the Star Wars peeps in the audience be willing to take a look at the first draft of my Club Vivid entry? Thanks in advance!

The Festivids reveals are live! I am so happy to be able to go download my favorites for constant rewatch.

I made two, Lose Yourself for "Hamilton" (now unlocked! *sigh*) and Welcome to the Jungle for "Henry V".

I got to thank [personal profile] caramarie for my fun Heathers vid, Don't Try Suicide, as well.

Now I'm off to register for Vividcon, wahoooo! I have the best inspiration for a Club Vivid entry that was already approved, so I'm holding that as my reward for making progress on all the crap I need to get done this weekend. If anyone wants to volunteer for beta/cheerleading/idea bouncing (*AHEM* [personal profile] heresluck), that would be fabulous.

I tried really, really hard, but I'm just not going to make the Vividcon Premieres deadline tonight with my vid WIP, an ode to lady spyjinks. I thought a while about asking for an extension, but there's just too much ground left to cover for this beast. I'll keep picking at it, but not to the fevered extent that I've been doing. I wish I felt more confident about it; I've been living in the headspace for this for so long that I've lost any ability to judge if it's even worth continuing with. (If anyone wants to play the guinea pig and get a sneak peek at it, I'd love to send out a copy of what I have.)

Well, at least now I won't feel guilty about doing anything else with my free time. *sigh*

How are you all doing at the start of the weekend?
grammarwoman: (Default)
I may be a little bit excited to be so close to done with this week. :)

First and foremost, it means the end of this OMGWTFBBQ GoTo shift. ARGH ARGH ARGH )

With all the stress of the past couple months, I had to give up on my vague intention to make an entry for Club Vivid. I still have an eye on an idea for a Premiere, so I need to kick my ass into gear and get going on that.

As a last minute reward for surviving this week, I bought a Saturday ticket for C2E2 and a photo op with Ming-Na Wen and Hayley Atwell! \o/ Fangirl flailing )

Wish me luck, and have a lovely weekend, all!

I completely oopsed on posting the past few days, with stuff and life and things.

So have a list of random and sundry good things!

1. Tonight's dinner was hot dogs and mac'n'cheese (one of the Emperor's favorites), with sides of canned chili and leftover fries and onion rings. I made myself a hot dog with chili, cheese, and onion rings, and it was trashily delicious.

2. At long (LONG) last, I think I've conquered this project at work that has been driving me around the bend. It involves mapping a hierarchical series of categories and items to an Excel file, with recursion to handle a variable amount of nesting. My brain is resistant to that kind of looping, so trying to get the logic to work for it has been challenging. I am so relieved to have a sample file to send off for approval.

3. I was watching a VVC streaming show the other day, and [personal profile] fan_eunice's Hoping Machine came on. From across the room, the Emperor asks "Are you watching that Harry Potter vid again?" It's been months since we've been through his playlist of favorites, and yet he can still ID the vid by a few bars of music. :D

4. My visit to the main company office has been scheduled for the second week of October, from Monday evening to Friday afternoon. It will be a great opportunity to get some face time with my team members and to enjoy a hotel room all by myself. I'll miss my sweetheart boys and dog, and I'm certain they'll really miss me. It will be a useful reminder to my husband of how much Emperor wrangling I do.

5. Festivids is coming! The anticipation is delightful; it's in the execution where I get unhinged.

6. I might actually get to bed at a reasonable time tonight - so, seeya!

I just got the test results back. The pregnancy test was negative.

We have a meeting with Dr. Asshole in September, so the husband and I have some talking to do before then about how to proceed with our last insurance-covered round of IVF. Like, do we want to spring right back into it? Or maybe wait a couple of months for me to get into better shape? Or consider donation eggs?

Needless to say, I'm pretty fucking disappointed, but I'm trying to maintain composure here at work with deflecting thoughts. I'd much rather get the negative now than another devastating loss at 6 weeks or 11 weeks or, God forbid, even further down the line.

Maybe later this week I'll be able to post about how great a time I had at Vividcon and all the wonderful people I got to meet and hang out with, the tremendous responses I received for my vids (mostly positive, some emotional-but-positive), and in general why it continues to be one of the highlights of my year.

Right now I'm just sick of crying at work.
