So I just got back from seeing "Wonder Woman", and wanted to get down everything swirling in my head before I dive into the 10+ open tabs I have on other peoples' reactions.

My one-word reaction: AWESOME.

SO MANY WORDS OF JOY/FEELINGS/SPOILERS )

I wish I could transport all of my friends to the Alamo Drafthouse so we could have our own screening of the movie and rejoice in unison. Then go pee and come back and see it all again.

I am so happy that I got to see "Wonder Woman" on opening weekend, and count towards a monster-stomp of a box office tally. This shouldn't have been the first WW movie, and it certainly won't be the last. I hope this opens the floodgates on female-led, female-driven movies and puts a damned stake in the heart of that terrible "But women can't carry a movie!" belief. Marvel, you have some ass-kicking boots to fill with "Captain Marvel". Learn some lessons and give us a movie even better than this one.

Now I'm going to go dive in those other tabs. Viva la Wonder Woman!
grammarwoman: Captain America in his Winter Soldier gear (Captain America Winter Soldier)
It's been just over a week since I've watched "Captain America: Civil War", and I still haven't decided if I liked it or not. I'm planning on taking the Emperor to see it soon (ADHD/ASD 11 year olds who have an opinion about EVERYTHING and can't share it at a whisper volume are not the ideal companions for the first viewing or opening weekend of a movie) so I can work through my ambivalence. First, though, I wanted to get my thoughts down so I can visit the multitude of tabs I have open with other people's reactions.

I went into this movie with the fervent hope that it wouldn't suck. When compared to Age of Ultron, it cleared that low bar easily. However, any movie held up next to CA: Winter Soldier is going to suffer, and this had its fair share of flaws. My issue is, I'm well aware that I am very emotionally invested in the characters and world-building of the MCU, which means I can't tell if my reaction is that of disappointed fangirl, or disappointed fan of stories and movies in general.

The good, the bad, and the WTF – Spoilers Ahoy! )

So after 1800+ words (!), I still can't put my finger on where I fall on the scale from love to loathe. I feel like that there are the bones and muscles of a good movie here (Steve! Bucky!) but someone over-accessorized it (TONY) and buried it under layers of unnecessary character time (Ross, Spider-Man). I don't normally see a movie a second time in the theater that I don’t absolutely love, but I feel like I owe it to myself to see it again, knowing what I know and not letting the good parts be smothered by my irritation at the rest.

What did you all think?
grammarwoman: (Default)
Are the flying pigs having snowball fights in hell? Because I seem to have made it through an entire regular TV season without a single one of my shows being canceled. That hasn't happened since...EVER. I even watched multiple new shows this year, and they all made it through. I don't think it's my tastes that are changing; either the networks are relaxing their standards for demographics and audience size required to renew, or *GASP* the masses are coming around to my way of thinking.

This includes: Castle, Grimm, iZombie, The Flash, Arrow, Agent Carter (:D :D :D), Agents of SHIELD, and Once Upon a Time. I'm not counting Glee because its end has been planned for a while.

Spoilers ahoy!

Once Upon a Time )

I am loving everyone's delight in Mad Max: Fury Road, both fannishly and critically. Links and fannish adjacent thoughts )

In flashback news, I've been watching Alias. Bless that zany early 00s show; I have to shake my head every time Sydney skulks through her missions in her all black spy gear...with a belly shirt, so her abdomen flashes through like a beacon whenever she moves. So stealthy!

Confession time: I loathed Kennedy in Buffy season 7. Her storyline, her designs on Willow, the lackluster performance by the actor...everything. So I take a certain amount of catty glee (I will admit to being an awful person sometimes) to seeing Iyari Limon in an irritable bowel medicine commercial. Heh heh heh.

Speaking of commercials, have you seen Kristen Bell and her husband Dax Shepard hawking Samsung appliances? They legitimately made me laugh; I watched the whole behind-the-scenes thing, because I love watching KBell in action, being loose and comfortable with herself, and HAPPY.

I saw Avengers: Age of Ultron, because it was necessary as a MCU fangirl. I'm still deciding if it's too late to post a reaction piece about it, because about 2300 words poured out of me when I sat down to watch an AHEM copy.

I've got a business trip next week to visit the main office. Airfare was ridiculous for traveling that week, so my coworker and I will have to drive 1.5 hours to a podunk airport, take a hop to Chicago, then over to the Twin Cities, meaning a day wasted in travel each way. But I'll get to have dinner with [personal profile] heresluck, which I am very happy about, and lots of down time to catch up on shows. I'll be packing Lost Girl, Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries, Doctor Who, Orphan Black, plus some movies for my Big Idea VVC vid...and going into the office at some point. :)

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

I ducked out today to see a daytime matinee of "Guardians of the Galaxy" at long last. I liked and enjoyed it, but I definitely wasn't blown away by it like I was with "Captain America: The Winter Soldier".

Don't get me wrong; it was entertaining, and considering that I went in only expecting it to be fun, it met that criteria. I guess I just don't have much to say about it that hasn't already been said by everyone else. Well, maybe a couple of shallow comments, like how gorgeous Karen Gillan is even when bald, blue, and cyborged, or though I appreciate that Marvel used as many women as they did (Glenn Close as a system leader, for one), they could have used even more, like in the Ravagers crew. The voice acting was skillfully done; I hardly recognized Bradley Cooper's voice, and Vin Diesel did an amazing job with distinguishing Groot's one line in a variety of ways. The CGI was enjoyable as well - I never expected to be that moved by a sentient tree. I also would have been more impressed had the script not given off such a bro-ish vibe; there was really no reason to set up Quill's character as a thoughtless womanizer and then just riff on it for a joke. We could have gotten just as much mileage out of him being awkward around women, without it being as insulting. I think they were trying to have their Kirk and Peter, too.

In conclusion: I'm glad I saw it, and even gladder now that I can dive into all the fic and analysis.

I was completely excited when it was announced a few years back that The True Meaning of Smekday was being made into a movie. I hadn't heard much in the interim until I read a mention of it in the recent Entertainment Weekly.

So this brilliant story, narrated by a biracial preteen, about how Earth was invaded by aliens twice and her subsequent cross-country trip with one of the aliens, with an attention-grabbing title that is easily searchable?

Has been simply named Home. Aside from naming it "The", I don't know how they could have come up with a more generic name.

I really hope it was a clusterfuck failure on the part of marketing, and not (as my husband suggested) the author's distancing himself from the end results. (There's a trailer here. I...don't know how to feel about that. The official movie website is not confidence-inducing, either.)

I mean, I realize some sacrifices had to be made to bring it to the screen (J.Lo is now "Oh", for example). But WHY would you take away that distinctive name?

Here's hoping they keep the plucky young heroine's story front and center, and ease up on the wacky alien antics.

ETA: OK, This trailer makes me feel a little better. I'm loving Rihanna's voice acting for Tip. Jim Parson's Oh may take a little longer to grow on me, if only because I enjoyed the narrator's voice for the Smekday audiobook - J.Lo/Oh should sound more alien!

Filming on Saturday night was...different. I threw together a couple of outfits, and tossed drinks and sandwich makings in a cooler and my Kindle in my purse and headed out. My work friend let me know that there was parking much closer than what we had been told, and considering it was 85+ degrees and 3000% humidity, I opted for the short walk instead of one that would have me arriving looking like Sponge Bob Sweaty Pants.

Hurry up and wait. And wait. And wait. )

So, a bunch of hours of sitting around, and I don't even know if I'll be in the film. Still, I'd probably do it again, since the waiting wasn't terrible, what with the auditorium seating and my Kindle and bag of snacks. I'm on their list, so now I'll have to see if I get called again.

I found out this week that there's an actual-factual movie filming here in town, starring Danny Glover and a surprising list of other big-name actors (Victor Garber! Anthony Edwards! Griffin Dunne!). It's called Food, "a modern political thriller that explores the complex world of Genetically Modified Food." That's certainly something that's right up my alley, both in subject matter and in making movies in general, so I submitted my name to the casting crew. I was informed today that I got picked as an extra!

I'm reporting late afternoon tomorrow to a site a couple of miles away from my house. I'm supposed to bring several "business casual or business professional" outfits to chose from, which will be a little wacky for me, considering that my workplace has been straight-up casual for almost a year now, not to mention that the crowd I'm supposed to be a part of is not typically pictured as dressing up that much. I'm hoping that I'll be able to pull together some ensembles that work for them. I'll probably want to wear some makeup and jewelry or something, too. Female gender performance is hard, yo!

I am grinning about this opportunity, even as I'm trying not to freak out about packing snacks and drinks and outfits and entertainment. A friend from work will be there as well, which makes me feel a lot better. I've always been jealous of you guys in Vancouver and other popular filming areas, getting to peek in on sets in action. Now I'll get to be a part of one!

Time for bed and sleep - I've got a lot of errands to conquer before my closeup tomorrow. ;)

Oh, Friday. I had such good intentions to get shit done at work, and then I got thwarted by both Javascript being inscrutably annoying (seriously, why is there no built-in function to enforce all-numeric entry?) and a developer NOT GETTING IT when I'm asking for help. (Dude, I have asked you three different ways to tell me where the code for the main page is and how I'm supposed to tie in my shit. You've given me NOTHING USEFUL. Don't make me stoop to including bosses on my email!)

So yeah, in response I've been following my Twitter stream, (yay, [twitter.com profile] TahmohPenikett is now on Twitter!) which is freaking HUGE because my add philosophy is a two-second "Do I know them?" question and not a "How cluttered is my list already?" ponderance. I'm a little jealous of everyone in the LA area who gets to see the last piggyback ride of the Space Shuttle.

I've also caught up with the last week's worth of LJ, which means investigating many blurbs of sales and deals. In the past few hours, I've sent people links to a sale on towels and Katniss Barbie, among others.

In other non-news, I finally saw "The Dark Knight Rises" last night! It was the last day of showing in the closest movie theater to me, and the husband graciously let me out of mommy duty for a night while he took the Emperor to Cub Scouts. So there I was, one of three people total in Theater 14 with no one in front of me. It felt so decadent and awesome, like my own private screening. I liked it, and I'm very glad I saw it on the big screen, but it definitely won't have an impact on me like "The Avengers".

Is there anyone left to be spoiled about this movie? )

I think I'll take one more stab at actual work. Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

My annual job review yesterday afternoon went excellently. I received many lovely comments, and a RAISE. Woo! I'm almost done coding on my current large project, and the news looks good on the next big thing.

If you'd like to play along with a meme, comment here with AVENGERS ASSEMBLE. I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

[livejournal.com profile] mrsdrjackson assigned me seven words for her meme: Emperor, gardening, elections, blue, wolves, libraries, and movies.

Emperor )

Gardening )

Elections )

Blue )

Wolves )

Libraries )

Movies )

I suppose that's enough babbling for a Friday afternoon. I hope you all have an enjoyable weekend.

Merciless menses )

My birthday was on Monday (at least my period spared me that joy), and it was nice slow day, with a flood of Facebook greetings (at the very least, it can do that right). I was in a perfect state of mind, where everything that people did for me was a nice surprise and not something that was due me. I may yet be tipping over into grace as I get older. *grin*

The actual day was preceded by a weekend of fun. A group joined me for teppanyaki on Saturday, where our chef was something of a goof and perhaps a little unorthodox in his prep order, but we certainly appreciated the gobs of butter that went into everything. It was quite tasty. Then half the group adjourned to watch movies and eat cake at a friend's house, and lo, there were many leftovers. *urp*

We watched "Red" Saturday night and "Easy A" Sunday, both of which were delightfully breezy comedies, just what I was looking for. Monday night my husband watched "Salt" with me, which was also enjoyable in an action-thriller, "gosh I could watch Angelina Jolie kick ass all day" kind of way. We also enjoyed the comedic stylings of the Animaniacs Sunday, with my birthday present of three DVD sets of the show. It's dated, yes, but it brings back a ton of memories of the group of us in college gathering in the afternoons to watch.

But the best present on Monday was the Emperor having a fabulous day at school. He said he intended it as a gift to me, and it was wonderful, especially considering it was his first day back from the week of Spring Break. The days since then have almost been as good, which is amazing.

We had his third Building Intervention Team meeting a few weeks back, which finally got the ball rolling on ordering evaluations for him (which should have been ordered after the first freaking meeting back in the fall, grrr), and according the announcement I got today, his IEP meeting is set for May 12. Way too late to benefit his current teacher, but hopefully enough time to get a plan in place for next fall.

I think I will treat myself to another glass of wine and then off to bed. G'night, all.

I slept much better last night after that post of woes.  Silly old brain.  Apologies as usual for the dump and post.

It's no news to anyone, I'm sure, that the internet is a scary, skeevy, screwy place.  Let's see....

Exhibit ANew Star Wars Disney Figures Coming Soon.  Now, I'm as big a fan of the crossover as anyone, and that Mickey/Yoda statue is kinda cute, and carbon-freezing him is an excellent way to get Donald to STFU already, but...Really.  You had to put Minnie in the Slave!Leia costume?  Gross, guys.  Just gross.

Exhibit BThe Cuchini Pad, for disguising that pesky case of camel toe.  (Now with celebrity examples!)  This chirpy ad proclaims "No bush, no cush!" and offers this solution to those addicted to Brazilian wax jobs and not wearing underwear with their tight pants.  I don't even know where to begin.

Exhibit C:  When you're tired of ratting your hair to ludicrous heights, turn to Bumpits!  I saw this on TV and could have sworn it was a fake SNL commercial.  Do they not realize how ridiculous the demonstrated hairstyles look?  Or, as usual, am I just hopelessly out of touch with today's fashions?  (See Exhibit B.)

Exhibit D: Color blind, or just color foolish?  You be the judge.  I had to do the copy, paste, zoom myself just to make sure that aqua = aqua.

Exhibit E: Little Love This Summer for A-List ActorsHollywood and movies: the same old new thing. )

And finally, news that got my fangirl heart beating very fast:  Chris Pine will sing and have an actual vocal offering on the soundtrack to the upcoming Small Town Saturday Night.  SQUEEEEEE!  (You didn't really need those eardrums, did you?)

And on that note - happy Friday everyone, and for those of you in the US, enjoy our national holiday dedicated to summer fun and colorful explosions!

I've been stacking up links to share with people all day. I'd be curious to see if all three of these hold some kind of meaning for anyone else.

Some beautiful fan(pro?) BSG art

A live action 'Cowboy Bebop' movie is in the works, starring Keanu. I am...intrigued.

Rob Thomas (the showrunner, not the singer) is planning a 'Veronica Mars' movie. There are not enough U's for my resulting "DUUUUUUUUUUUDE!"

And...time to boogie. Seeya!

I went to see a movie yesterday! Whereupon our heroine views a film and expounds at some length about it. )

In conclusion (and wow, this kind of length is why I don’t do much commentary), I firmly liked "Sweeney Todd". I wouldn’t say it was the greatest film ever and that you must drop everything and go see it, but if you’re not too squeamish, appreciate musicals and/or the oddness of Tim Burton and his merry madmen and women, then you may very well enjoy this movie, too.
