Just in time for the weekend, I am all caught with LJ. Then I'll probably be away from it for the next two days, come back to skip=300, and repeat the catch-up cycle. *sigh* And now that Dreamwidth is up and running in open beta, I want to keep up with that, too. Oh, and Twitter. Basically, I'm insane. I need one huge conglomerating tool that will fold it all up, locked posts and all, and lay it out for me.

Speaking of Dreamwidth - I've got five invite codes. Lemme know if you would like one. My user name is the same - chime in with yours if you got an account already.

I found out some potentially happy news -- evidently David R. Palmer, author of one of my favorite books, Emergence, wrote a sequel named "Tracking" that was serialized in three parts in the Analog magazine issues from July to October of 2008. Now to track those down somewhere...

One of my least admirable qualities is that I am quick to bitch'n'moan about things going wrong, but rarely do I give praise where it is due. I don't know if it's due to a newfound love of Lego PS2 games, the potential loss of which keeps him in line, but the Emperor has been AMAZING at school. Every day, we get raves from the teachers about how well he's doing, and what a funny, exuberant guy he is. I have to admit, playing video games with him is a blast (when he's not yelling at me for having sniped his coins). And the things his brain comes up with, like the other day when he said, "I am R2-D2, please insert robot." (Think Futurama's Bender for the original quote, and the Lego Star Wars games, where R2 can disable any robot.) I just about died.

I am off to pick up my new glasses. Let's hope that the pain and expense were worth it. Now if only the Emperor's would come in, so we can get his horrendously scratched-up ones replaced.

Happy Friday, everybody!

[livejournal.com profile] seperis, pundit vixen that she is, pointed out [livejournal.com profile] brown_betty's Oh My God, I Can See Your Id!, a discussion of books "where an author appears to be exposing her id, and doesn't know it."

Most of my favorite authors from my pre-adolescent through teen years are mentioned in the comments, from Anne McCaffrey and Mercedes Lackey to David Eddings and Robert Heinlein, with special mentions of Marion Zimmer Bradley and other fixtures.

I was already feeling embarrassed by some of those just by the way they have not aged well at all, or that I have. Now I don't even know if there will be anything left in our library to steer the Emperor towards the Good Stuff. "Um, well, there's Jim Butcher and Glen Cook and Kage Baker and...Crap. Lemme get back to you."

Heh. Lots of things bouncing around in this here grey matter.

I want many of these T-shirts, especially the aliens and the Pyramids, and the Discworld one, and...

A [livejournal.com profile] 14valentines entry here listed a bunch of Faith (from "Buffy") and Dean (from "Supernatural") fics and vids, and sweet holy bejeebus, do I have a new kink. Hot like hellfire doesn't begin to describe it. Where have I been all these years? Following (as I do) down the rabbit hole (or rather, link to link to link), I stumbled across Wildcat as well, which is Dean/Sam/F (where I'm pretty sure I've spoiled who F is), and WHOA NELLY. Major distraction. (I don't even WATCH Supernatural, but c'mon. Jensen Ackles is too damned pretty to resist.)

For those of us who have been bad pet parents, Advantage is sponsoring an awesome deal where if you can score one of their online vouchers and then take your pet to the vet sometime between now and May 31st, they'll reimburse you up to $20. Warning: it took me several tries to get a voucher. I had to be ready to click right at the beginning of an hour, as their counter resets then.

[livejournal.com profile] miniglik is currently smitten with Legend of the Seeker, and based on her posts and the screencaps here, I am so, so tempted. But the books it's based on? Yeah, it's Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth, a series that I tried really hard to slog through, and I made it about four or five books in before I had to give up. Thus, I dither.

Eek! Quitting time. Later!

Oh, one more thing: my list of vid ideas is now at 100 entries. Anyone got a pocket dimension I can nip into for a year or so to get these out of my system, and return home without time having passed?

Well, CRAP

Guess what our most recent load of laundry looks like after the Emperor left a brown crayon in his pants...

Yes, exactly. *sigh*

In other news, thanks to the brilliant groupthink of [livejournal.com profile] the_sween and [livejournal.com profile] hecateuse who had it running when we showed up for BSG last Friday night, the Emperor is now fascinated with Futurama, which pleases his dad to no end as that's his favorite show of all time.

However, the Emperor is less interested in seeing all the eps in a row; he'd rather go back and watch the same set over and over. But you know what? Futurama is visually rich enough that seeing an episode multiple times doesn't send me into a fugue. Unlike, say, Scooby-Doo -- did you know that Scooby-Doo is 40 years old now? And that Shaggy was even more of a stoner wastoid than I ever picked up on as a kid?

We also tried "The Empire Strikes Back" last week, but the Emperor didn't take to it like he did "A New Hope". I think we'll offer it again in a month or so -- I think if he can last until Yoda on Dagobah, he'll be hooked.

I can't tell you how much it thrills me to be nurturing my son along the path to High Geekdom. As soon as he levels up in reading and attention span, I think we'll start doing chapter books. When he gets sucked into reading on his own, he has such a treat ahead of him. Though he may get mad that his inheritance has already been spent on books and DVDs. *grin*

We're in the future, now - where are our damned teleporters? *Sigh*

So yeah, remember how a couple of months ago I was all looking forward to Neil Gaiman signing books in Downers Grove? I have no idea where the intervening weeks went, but due to a number of different factors (time and distance being primary), I can't go. *pout* Can I ask anyone out there who's planning on going to pick up a signed copy for me? I'll reimburse you the book price and shipping and everything.

In the overall scheme of things, I can't be TOO disappointed by it, since one of the mitigating factors is that the husband has himself a job! He's now working Tier II tech support for a media distribution company here in town, with the potential of moving up in the chain of command after a few months. He is so much happier now, and our bank account will breath a huge sigh of relief once the double income starts rolling in. My thanks go out to everyone who sent us good wishes.

It's been an interesting transition for us, since now mundane things like laundry, dishes, and grocery shopping have to be handled in the off hours. I haven't been stepping up as much as I should, what with ongoing work crap (they moved me to another frelling cube in the department for no other reason than to punish me) and this cold that is finally wearing off (2.5 weeks later). I have A Plan, though, that involves A) Going to Bed on Time (So easy, yet so elusive), B) Getting up early to exercise and Lose Some Damned Weight, Jellybelly (Not so easy, but necessary), and C) Getting a handle on expenses so the debts go away quicker. Hopefully, all of these will lead to a Happier Me, which is a Me less inclined to loll around on the couch, using TV and LJ as my anti-depressants.

Buh. Wednesday. Back to work.

I was just browsing the feed from Neil Gaimain's blog. From his latest post, I saw that he'll be touring for his latest book, "The Graveyard Game", in the fall. I was idly skimming the locations when my eye hit one entry and I had to check, re-check, and triple-check, just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

Thursday, October 2nd–
Chapter 3 Chicago, IL
6pm Tivoli Theatre, hosted by Andersons Bookshop
5021 Highland Ave
Downers Grove, IL 60515
Contact: Becky Anderson Phone: (630) 355-2665
Note: The venue is a beautifully restored 1920s movie palace with seating for 1000. This will be a ticketed event, 1 ticket = 1 book. After the reading and Q&A, ‘Stardust’ will be shown.

HOLY CRAP! I can't tell you how many movies I've seen at the Tiv, and he is so right: the place is gorgeous. The fact that he's doing the signing and showing 'Stardust' there seems to me to be a message from Fate telling me that I need to get my ass back home for this event. (Also, that I need to sign up for the Anderson's schedule, so I know when I should get my mom to go stand in line for me for other authors...)

It would have to be a Thursday evening. Hm. Must ponder vacation schedule.

Other random thought: I need a book icon. Or a Sandman/Gaiman icon. Or both.

Boosted from [livejournal.com profile] logodaedaly:

The original instructions, which seem to have gotten dumped early on:

"What we have here is the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing’s users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded. Bold the ones you've read, underline the ones you read for school, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish."

I'm gonna go with simply listing them in my own arbitrary categories.
Woo! List! )

God bless the internet, and LJ in particular, making it easier than ever to stalkkeep up on your favorite authors...

Hi, my name is Kim, and I like to read, in the way that most people like to breathe. )
I think I have to stop now, as my brain is full. Feel free to chime in with authors I've missed.
