I took today off from work as a birthday present to myself and had ambitious plans to Get Shit Done - and then I realized I haven't read DW in a long while and have been playing catch-up all day. Ah well.

1. Name: Hm. I feel like I should be internet safe here and not share my RL name, but if you don't know and want to, PM me.

2. Age: 49 as of today - it's my actual-factual birthday!

Even with my complete lack of motivation to do anything that pleases my manager (because I'm a sulky brat like that), I have been kicking ass and taking names this week at work. I really hope my team members are noticing, since I can't depend on my manager to catch on.

I'm hoping I can get my stuff together and take tomorrow afternoon off, because I need some quality time cleaning the house, and not putting out one work-related fire after another. Here's hoping for a relaxing weekend for everyone.

Friday!

grammarwoman: Painted poster of the Avengers (Avengers assemble!)
This has been a week of long days, trying to finish up on a project that won't die. (Seriously, just when I think it's ready to go live, they keep coming up with new requirements.) I have been looking forward to seeing "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" for months now, so today was extra long. I should be sitting down to see it in a theater sometime tonight. \o/ I have carefully saved off everyone's reaction posts to savor later.

Other things that have been making me happy:

This Honeymaid graham cracker commercial about different kinds of family (a gay couple with a baby, a biracial family, punk rock parents), and the follow-up commercial they made when comments got ugly on the first one, which is one of the most elegant "haters to the left" announcements I've seen.

The new CEO of Mozilla stepping down shortly after taking the position, due to extreme negative reaction to his politics (like donations to Prop 8 in California, supporting gay marriage bans).

I'm not so happy to hear that Chris Evans wants to move on from acting, because I am totally shallow like that. I really like watching him in action! But after the movie immersion and media blitzkrieg for CA:WS, Avengers II, and CA3 that will be his life for the next several years, I can see where he'd want a break.

My birthday was a week ago, and I got a bunch of lovely greetings. (Thank you, everybody!) I took the day off work and gave our TV a long over-due deep clean. It's amazing how much I can get done when I don't have Imperial distractions in my way. I have to take several more vacation days this month before I lose them, so I foresee more cleaning in my future. Child!me would be appalled.

I hope you all are having an enjoyable night with a great weekend ahead of you.

I would usually celebrate by taking the day off work, but I'm already burning through my vacation days with the Vancouver trip. Instead, I bought my general admission and Dog's Breakfast tickets for the con, plus I finally got the confirmation letter that they received my vid entry. \o/ There's still the niggling detail, though, where I'll be staying. Anyone have space for me in their hotel room? Please?

In other linky news:

[livejournal.com profile] sabaceanbabe posted a delightful, sensual, and porny Veronica Mars fic for me, because she is awesome both at remembering and basically as a person. *GRIN* It's definitely tipping me towards working on a VM vid for Club Vivid.

I can't tell if the creators of this Can I Get a Hell Yeah! T-shirt are Farscape fans, or if it's just that common a saying. I'd totally get it, if I thought the Emperor would refrain from yelling that every time I wore it.

Cate Blanchett is beautiful, full-stop. But it's so refreshing to see a gorgeous woman who has bags under her eyes. We age and we get tired. No amount of expensive creams and lotions are going to fix that. (Note to self: you should still get more sleep.)

The Scale of the Universe 2 is a nifty toy to zoom in and out of. Start at the smallest point of the scale and pretend you're on a massive Katamari roll!

I am having a mellow birthday; it's been really nice. I've gotten a bunch of greetings on Facebook, been useful several times at work, the Emperor called me from school on his teacher's phone to let me know he had an awesome day, and I may even indulge in some greasy carry-out for dinner. But really, I'm pushing forward to the end of the day tomorrow, when I'll be past my annual review (*fingers crossed* for a raise) and some other news.

Have a great Wednesday, all!

Yesterday was the Emperor's 6th birthday. It had extra resonance for me, seeing as he was born on a Tuesday, and he's passed the kid milestone of Starting School. I may have gotten a little weepy on my husband last night.

School is continuing to be a challenge for him. He got 8 stars Monday and 12 out of 14 stars yesterday, mainly because he was the Big Cheese for the day because of his birthday. Then he got written up in the after-school program for hitting a kid. *sigh* But then he was awesome at the capoeira Halloween party, so he came full circle.

My parents are visiting this weekend, so I'm fighting off panic mode when I glare at the crap stacks around my house. There is so much paperwork and assorted stuff coming home from kindergarten that I'm getting really annoyed, especially since a lot of it is time-sensitive documents that need feedback and/or signatures from us. I'd shove it all in my to-do pile, but that's already precariously tall and something I avoid for weeks on end. His school should not be giving us homework! At least I have a menu and some activities planned - more grownup points for me! I plan on being partially fueled by candy to power my way through cleaning and prepping the next several days.

Really, how is October almost over? Didn't we just start September last week?

I find myself lingering over the news of Robert Culp's death. For some, he'll always be half of "I Spy", but for me, he remains Bill Maxwell from "The Greatest American Hero", besides his fabulous (and numerous) guest-star roles. Bruce Campbell owes him a debt, I think, for introducing that brand of swaggering charm and confidence.

I am sad, too, to learn of the Glee Tour - well, not sad about the tour per se, but the fact that I can't hope to afford a ticket at this point. The original prices were somewhere between $40 to $60, but now the cheapest start at $130. I know I haven't bought a big arena ticket in a looooooong time; when did scalped prices become the status quo? A big boo to them all.

Speaking of booing them all: "An Open Letter to Conservatives" is almost everything I ever wanted in a rebuttal letter. The only thing it lacks is a chisel to open the minds of my Glen Beck-loving coworkers so that they'd both read it and give any credence to the copious, overwhelming evidence of "where the Right has gotten itself stuck in a swamp of hypocrisy, hyperbole, historical inaccuracy and hatred." How do we fix this, guys?

As usual, I can count on the Emperor for daily doses of levity. Take, for instance last night: we'd settled him down to bed, I finally got the chance to sit down and relax, when I heard the thumping of feet, followed by the inevitable "Mooooooom! Mom Mom Mom!" call.

Me, yelling up the stairs: "WHAT."
Emperor: "I had to go poopy."
Me: "That's nice! Finish up and go back to bed."
Emperor: "Aren't you going to help?"
Me: "NO."
Emperor: "I miss the old days."
Me: "What old days?"
Emperor, wistfully: "The days when you used to wipe my butt."

The great thing about being at a distance like that is that you can crack up and they can't catch you.

I am busy prepping a list of all the things I want to cram into the day I'm taking off tomorrow. It includes getting the Emperor registered for kindergarten, doing some shopping and cooking for the birthday party I'm throwing for myself on Saturday, and decrappifying the house, among other tasks. Stupid responsible adult stuff, all of it - ah, well.

I had a birthday back there at the end of March, and then I got sucked into RL for a while. (Helped plan a baby shower, had food to prep, supplies to pack...all things that resulted in being AFK.)

With that gap, I have been grossly remiss in not posting pictorial evidence of the insanely amazing birthday cake [livejournal.com profile] leiaorgana_73 commissioned for me because she loves me bunches and bunches.

Are you ready?

SG fans must click. Seriously. Only personal delivery by one of my celebrity crushes could have improved this cake. )

Bonus points if you can tell what the Ancient script says. (She even hunted down Ancient script to encode that for me. I don't deserve her.)

The fact that it was one of the tastiest damn cakes ever didn't hurt, either.

Hey, [livejournal.com profile] leiaorgana_73? YOU ROCK THE CASBAH.

I wish I could think of a clever word for mental detritus, ideas and memories that float up in your brain at random times, and the thoughts that submerge and percolate until you retrieve them. Hm. Flotsyn and jetsyn?

I am sad to be turning the page of my World Wildlife Fund calendar, as May featured Blue-Footed Boobies. I have a ridiculous fondness for them, you see; how did they evolve to have such startling appendages? And who decided to name them Boobies? Just saying their name puts a smile on my face, rather like the Troy-Bilt Chipper Vac. (If I've ever succumbed to a case of the Blahs, feel free to mention either subject, and it will instantly cheer me up, rather like "Hot Lava!" in a game of Apples to Apples is an auto-win.)
Unplanned long weekend )
I am very blinky-tired right now after another night of thunderstorms and a dog in hysterics. She actually wound up falling asleep on my bed, which has never happened before. Five hours of fretting will wear out anyone, I suppose. I am keeping an eye on the clock; when 1:45 rolls around, I'm treating myself to a 20 oz Diet Coke as an offering to the Great Goddess Caffeina to help me stay awake.

There was something else, really there was, like an actual point to posting, rather than recapping. I blame the Boobies. Perhaps it will float up later.

Why can't I temporarily live in California? Where's my teleporter technology when I need it the most?

Creation just had to go and book several conventions in November, in freaking BURBANK, that I MUST attend, but could they put the two that I desperately want to go to in the same damn weekend? Of course not. They scheduled the Farscape Farewell two weekends before the BSG/Stargate combo, just to fuck with me. I mean, Celebrity Boyfriends Ben Browder versus Tahmoh Penikett? Old favorite sci-fi show versus new favorite sci-fi show? Last Farscape con versus last big BSG con while it's still going? How am I supposed to make a choice, here? (Oh, and please don't suggest that I can fly out for both, because, no, the budget would take me out back and shoot me first. Unless, of course, you want to give me some free airfare.)

Why the hell couldn't they have done the Farscape/BSG combo? (Other than the fact that I would have exploded from sheer joy, or become a meth addict to not sleep the whole damn weekend for fear of missing anything.) I can catch a Stargate con any old time -- plus, they don't have any featured guests planned for that one that I especially want to see. (Ben, Claudia Black, David Hewlett, for example). NYARGH!

When I first heard about the Farscape Farewell a month or so back, I was all psyched and ready to get planning -- it was going to be my 35th birthday present to myself, a few months early. I know I could have gotten my parents to both go in on it and watch the Emperor in our absence. The husband was even good to go. I was excited and giddy! Now...now I'm all torn.

Stupid space/time/entertainment-center-that-is-California continuum. Bah.
