...or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Festivids!

What a difference a year makes! Last time around I was fretting and miserable and so wrapped up in my head, comparing my work to everyone else's, that I couldn't sit back and enjoy the glorious outpouring of vids at Festivids reveal time.

Feeling Groovy )

I've only made it through watching the smallest portion of the masterlist, but I intend to hit every one, even if I can't leave feedback on each.

Oh, and I would be totally remiss if I didn't mention the sweet "Anne of Green Gables" vid I received. It captures so much of what I loved about the movie series; I was in happy-sniffly tears by the end of it, being reminded of the amazing characters and the gorgeous scenery and all the wonderful ways they adapted the book, the biggest part being the casting of Megan Follows as Anne. I love the gentle, strummy song by James Taylor; paired with the visuals, it gives the feeling of a stroll through Avonlea. Some weekend, I'm going to have to sit down and watch the whole series again.

I love everyone in this vidding fandom! :)

So, I created a new Vimeo account to upload my Festivids entry, and it immediately got banhammered. Then when I tried to submit a fair use appeal, it gave me a smug error message. NYARGH.

Guess I'm going to see tonight if I get the same thing with an anon YT upload.

But hey! At least I'm done with the vid, any last-minute nervous tweaking aside.

TGIF(estivds)!

Poor Emperor. His two-week vacation comes to a close with his return to school tomorrow, and oh, the sleepy whining of "I don't want to go back to school!" I hear you, kid. I had almost the same amount of time off, though working from home bookended it, plus hosting my parents for Christmas, throwing what turned out to be the petitest of soirees for New Year's, and then having a ladies weekend, ate up a lot of that "free time" with cleaning/cooking/shopping/decorating/wrapping/preparing. My fitness tracker credited me with a lot of steps during those whirlwinds.

Now I'm looking at the craptacular weather outside - I didn't know it could snow this much when it's only 10 degrees - and I'm right there with the Emperor wishing for a snow day tomorrow.

I have a ton of tabs open with Yuletide recs and such, but the looming deadline of my Festivid is (as usual) preventing me from enjoying anything non-FV oriented. That meant a lot of guilty tappy games on my phone while I watched the source over the past two weeks. Several seasons worth of "Oh, man, I forgot how much I loved this show!", followed by the crushing end of "And it's done and gone now."

My social anxiety seems to be getting worse, or perhaps is harder to deal with after all the social time. I loved hanging out with people, but I could have done without the brain weasel thoughts of "They're just putting up with you because it's the holidays. Nobody cares if you're here or not."

I feel lucky that 2014 wasn't catastrophically bad for me and the immediate family. I hope that 2015 brings some actual good news.

Oh, vidder, I can't begin to tell you how giddy you're making me just in anticipation. A vid for me? *BLISS* This hobby of ours is hard and frustrating and occasionally drives one up a wall, but I hope it pays off for you with an end result that makes you as happy as I know it will make me.

For music suggestions, I will steal from last year's description: I am wide open. Anything from opera to Broadway musical soundtracks to bluegrass to techno to industrial to whatever song your delightful brain hits upon, I will love. Feel free to ignore any suggestions I may make below if you find something that better tickles your fancy.

Vidding-wise, things that I love include character movement to the beat, literal (or liberal) interpretation of the lyrics, people with expressive faces, awesome women doing awesome things, characters who take and express joy in being around each other, and people who are phenomenally good at what they do, whatever that might be. Extreme competence FTW!

If you want further general inspiration, you can take a trip through my Festivids tag.

I can't wait to see your amazing work. :)

I completely oopsed on posting the past few days, with stuff and life and things.

So have a list of random and sundry good things!

1. Tonight's dinner was hot dogs and mac'n'cheese (one of the Emperor's favorites), with sides of canned chili and leftover fries and onion rings. I made myself a hot dog with chili, cheese, and onion rings, and it was trashily delicious.

2. At long (LONG) last, I think I've conquered this project at work that has been driving me around the bend. It involves mapping a hierarchical series of categories and items to an Excel file, with recursion to handle a variable amount of nesting. My brain is resistant to that kind of looping, so trying to get the logic to work for it has been challenging. I am so relieved to have a sample file to send off for approval.

3. I was watching a VVC streaming show the other day, and [personal profile] fan_eunice's Hoping Machine came on. From across the room, the Emperor asks "Are you watching that Harry Potter vid again?" It's been months since we've been through his playlist of favorites, and yet he can still ID the vid by a few bars of music. :D

4. My visit to the main company office has been scheduled for the second week of October, from Monday evening to Friday afternoon. It will be a great opportunity to get some face time with my team members and to enjoy a hotel room all by myself. I'll miss my sweetheart boys and dog, and I'm certain they'll really miss me. It will be a useful reminder to my husband of how much Emperor wrangling I do.

5. Festivids is coming! The anticipation is delightful; it's in the execution where I get unhinged.

6. I might actually get to bed at a reasonable time tonight - so, seeya!

I've been dipping my toes into the pool of Festivids offerings, going by people's recs lists (a big thank you to those who have posted them!) and the vids they themselves made, as well as the other fandoms that catch my eye. At this rate, I may finish going through the whole collection by Vividcon.

I am still squeefully happy about the fantastic vid [personal profile] littleheaven made for me, Sunrise, a Footloose vid. (There was only one version of "Footloose", made in 1984. Anything else is a figment of someone's deranged imagination.) I love it to pieces! It hits so many of my favorite parts of the movie: the dancing, teenage rebellion, smart-ass confident girls with secrets and inner lives, Kevin Bacon's FACE...the first time I saw it, I clapped during and when it was done, no lie, and then watched it again and again. Thank you, [personal profile] littleheaven! I am thrilled with this gift.

I actually branched out this year and made two vids, a gift and a treat. I don't know that I'm entirely happy with my "Strange Days" vid, Strange Times, especially after seeing the other amazing entries in that fandom, but giftee [livejournal.com profile] bironic enjoyed it, so I will call it good. Thanks again, [livejournal.com profile] jetpack_monkey for the timely beta assist!

I couldn't have asked for a better reaction than [personal profile] fan_eunice's flails for the treat I made: a vid for "The Last Starfighter", The Moment of Truth. I had a lot of fun pulling that one together and going deep into the zone of blowing things up in time to the beat.

This has been a long week of bleh, so I'm looking forward to holing up at home in my PJs. Hurry up, Friday night, and get here already.

Notes: This is a treat for [personal profile] fan_eunice, for Festivids 2013. Her request was for a vid celebrating the cheesy 80's sci-fi goodness that is "The Last Starfigher", dedicated to her and her mom. This movie was also a highlight of my childhood; I lost track of how many times I watched it on cable. I've loved her vids so much that I wanted to pay her back just a little bit of joy. As a fellow child of the 80s, I was inspired to use an anthemic track from the Karate Kid soundtrack. If the whole thing feels over the top, well...that's the 80s, man. :)

UGH, my brain. I have been looking forward to Festivids for so long, but now that it's here, I am awash in ugly, brain-weasellish emotions.

I did a gift vid and a treat, and both of them garnered lovely comments from their recipients. But both vids had other entries in the same fandoms, which so far have garnered higher quality and quantity of comments. I don't even know if mine will wind up with as many comments as my previous Festivids entries have gotten.

I HATE this about myself, the obsessive checking and counting and measuring up against others. I go and rewatch my vids, and I don't think they suck that bad, but they aren't impressing other people, so am I totally deluded? How am I ever going to get better if I can't distinguish what's problematic in the first place?

I keep telling myself that I'm still a beginner, and I have to put in the work in, and I should be making these for myself first anyway and any other positive feedback I get is a bonus...and nope. Instead I'm finding myself sulking and upset, and completely in the wrong frame of mind to watch the bounty of vids.

Goddamn brain weasels.

Here in Central Illinois we are being battered by a blizzard. It's been snowing since last night and is due to continue for another 12 hours, with 25 mph winds and a steadily dropping temperature. It's estimated to hit -17 degrees with a -42 degree wind chill tomorrow morning.

I did the grocery shopping yesterday at my husband's urging and got to witness the marvel that is emergency paranoia; entire shelves of supplies were depleted, like bread and vegetables (aside from a sad stripe of radishes - I love you, radishes, even if no one else does!). For once, I actually got everything that was on my list.

The Emperor is ensconced on the couch, watching Minecraft videos on YouTube. He's been pestering us for a month now to buy him the full version, but I've been leery. I tried to explain to him that people online can be cruel and unforgiving to n00bs, that I worry about the language being used, and most importantly, that his computer won't handle the load. Anyone else have Minecraft experience that can give me tips?

I've been home with the Emperor for two weeks now; I took off days around Christmas and New Year's and finished it off by working from home. Alas that my free time got eaten by Christmas shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking and cleaning, so I have not been keeping up with everyone's posts. I've bookmarked a couple of Yuletide recs lists to peruse, but I think I might have to give up on a full wayback dive. Sorry if I miss something amazing you shared!

My Festivids entry is kicking my ass. I procrastinated so long that it's now a ticking time bomb in the back of my head. I've got about a minute down, and hope to bang out the rest today just to have anything done as a first draft.

I hope everyone else that is being snowblasted can stay inside cozy and warm. May the power stay on and the hot beverages flow!

Dear Festividder,

If you matched on one or more of my requests, I think we would be fantastic friends, because you clearly have amazing taste and a generosity of spirit. :) Thank you so much for indulging me by making a vid.

It was so hard this year to pare down my list, but I guarantee that you will make me squeefully happy with any of these fandoms. You may have noticed it's kind of heavy on the nostalgia; I am what I am, that being a child of the 80s who spent way too much watching movies on cable and the cheesiest of sci-fi/fantasy.

When it comes to music to go along with these requests, I am wide open. Anything from opera to Broadway musical soundtracks to bluegrass to techno to industrial to whatever song your delightful brain hits upon, I will love. Feel free to ignore any suggestions I may make below if you find something that better tickles your fancy.

The weekend is soooo close now. We're having a potluck today at work, and I am about two bites away from uncomfortably full from the sheer deliciousness available. (And about two blinks from a nap, too.)

I could/should be working, but there's a code freeze right now as an urgent project gets approved to go live, so everything I do has to wait until next week anyway.

Instead, I am working on my Festivids offers and requests. I copied the whole list of available entries to a spreadsheet, then went through and deleted everything that didn't immediately pique my interest. Now I'm going back and removing those items that I merely own and/or have enjoyed, feel like I should want to do, or would like to see a vid for, in favor of the ones that really resonate with me, because 60 fandoms is kind of a ridiculous amount to offer. This is so HARD. I need to make another list of things I would consider making as treats, so I don't feel so bad about cutting them from the list.

Vidders, what's your winnowing process and criteria?

Quite the opposite, really. Though I am dead tired, with sore boobs and EMOTIONS (ALL THE EMOTIONS). Luckily, the hungry/queasies are subsiding into mainly hungry.

So, yeah, um...In short, have a picture from yesterday: )

The pregnancy test was positive right before Christmas, but with all the ups and downs we went through in the last round of IVF and the miscarriage, I was not about to let myself feel anything other than "cautiously optimistic". Three ultrasounds later, two of them with a very healthy heartbeat, and a glowing report from the nurse, I think I may be ready to upgrade to "happily pregnant". We still have to get through testing, though (I'm on the older side for a pregnancy, seeing as I'm turning 40 in a couple of months), so I'm not going on any shopping sprees or announcing it on FB yet.

Being OMG tired all the time hasn't helped with the emotional hormone wallop, so I apologize if lately I've been even more of a drama llama than usual at people. Festivids has been weirdly tough for me - I tried really hard with my entry, but I'm disappointed in myself with how it turned out and how few responses there have been. At least my recipient liked it, so I know I should count myself good with that.

I'm also in a weird dilemma, as the dates were just announced for Vividcon. It's going on the same weekend as the Chicago Stargate Creation con, for which I've already bought a ticket. (Amanda Tapping! Ben Browder! David Hewlett! Kate Hewlett! It's like they handpicked all my favorites just for me!) So I may attempt the impossible and pull a Peter Brady, trying to attend both. Considering I'll be 8 months pregnant at that point, who knows how that will go. I want to see all my Stargate friends (Hewlett Harem represent!), but I'm also now addicted to the Vividcon crowd, and I don't want to give up either of you. Especially since this will most likely be my last opportunity to attend cons for a year or two.

First world fangirl problems, I know. I could come down with a bad case of bed rest at that point, in which case I'll have a row D Stargate ticket for sale.

Thank you all for being so supportive on this wild ride of mine. Some people get a new car or take up exciting new hobbies when their midlife crises hit. Me, I'm gonna have a baby. :D

You are just about my favorite person in the world right now. I have been looking forward to Festivids all year, and now it's time to get my squee all over you! (Uh, sorry about that. Hope you brought a towel.)

I love vids, which, DUH, I know - who would sign up for Festivids if they didn't? I love all sorts of vids set to all sorts of music. I watch vids enough that my son has build up his own list of his favorites, based on what he's seen me watch. Vids have introduced me to new music and new fandoms. Vids are a happy place for me.

To narrow things down a bit: I'm open to almost any kind of music. I'm not a huge fan of country & western (though I have a weakness for really poppy C&W, like Shania Twain and The Dixie Chicks, and I adore bluegrass) or rap (I think it's a spoken-word comprehension thing and my lack thereof). If you think you've found the perfect song, though, go for it!

You may notice that a few of the entries below are repeats from last year. I have urges, dude! Unfulfilled urges, longings that linger through the... OK, that's getting a little weird.

You know you're having a crazy-busy weekend when your first-ever Festivids entry is posted in the Festivids masterlist and you don't realize it until practically the next day.

I have no idea what happened - indulging the n00b? inspired by my requests? - but I got TWO vids made for me. Two amazing, delightful, I-can't-believe-these-are-mine vids:

All is Not Lost, a Babylon 5 vid. The music starts with crashing noises in a minor key, all dramatic, and then resolves into a perfect upbeat, driving force. It is such a fantastic match for the subject. Considering the show went for five seasons, the vidder must have had a long process of drawing out so many great clips, and building in short but completely comprehensibly arcs: Ivanova and the Rangers against the Shadows, Londo conflicted and G'Kar and the Narns finally triumphant over the Centauri, the whole Babylon 5 crew against wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey shenanigans. Plus, we get vignettes of the crew hugging, drinking, dining, and generally being awesome around and to each other. In short, it's a wonderful treatment of one of my favorite shows. I've watched the vid several times, and I can't wait for a download so I can put it in my permanent collection.

A Meditation on Genius and Scientific Discovery; Containing Elucidations of the Most Trying Aspects of Learning and Experimentation, with Full Explanations Given of the various Types of Genius be they Careful, Reckless, or Evil; Together with Numerous Illustrations of Successful Demonstrations of Applied Brilliance, a Real Genius vid. This is a total romp through a movie I remember quite fondly from my childhood. Geeks having fun! Geeks being handsome and silly and not the target of jock jokes! Geeks being romantic! Geeks being triumphant! The opening title sets off with a pompous air, and I couldn't help but seal-clap in delight as the vid unspooled. I haven't seen the movie in a long while, and this offering brought it all back to me.

My vid garnered some lovely comments as well, and the recipient proclaimed herself to be delighted with the result, so I'd call it a success. *grin*

Thank you so much to all the vidders (and especially mine!) for the wonderful vids, and many thanks to the mods of this exchange. My only regret is that I only did one entry. Next year, I hope to plan better and spread out the love.

I came, I saw, I...waited until nearly the last minute to get going on my Festivids entry. *sigh* I've been going nearly nonstop on this thing for the last two weeks, and I think I'm close to done.

I have a rough cut that I would desperately love for someone to take a look at. Subject knowledge not necessary - I'm mainly looking for a second pair of eyes to tell me if it's presentable.

Any betas, please?
