A Festivid for

Notes: OK, first of all: AAAGGGGHHHHH!!! I completely failed to do my due diligence, and entirely missed the fact that PoP was a Festivids entry. Last year. TO THIS SAME DAMNED SONG. I am still embarrassed as hell about this, so my apologies to everyone who very politely did not rake me over the coals for making such a fundamental mistake. It made me want to delete it and remake the entire vid overnight to some polar opposite piece of music.
So that happened.
But BEFORE that, I had a ridiculous go-around trying to get the source. I knew I could buy it online, and probably should have done that first because I've loved this movie since the summer when I was a kid and caught it just about every time it was on cable. (Or so it seemed. I saw it a lot.)
However, I've been trying to cut down on how many DVDs are on my shelf, and instead tried to get it through my library. Normally they have everything, or they can get it on loan for me from somewhere else. This time, the computer got hung up on the fact that a live performance with most of the same cast was released before the movie, named the same as the movie, and in my library system, coded the same as the movie. So I put in a request and got the live performance. Oops! As charming as that was, it was not what was on my Festivids assignment, so I returned it, and requested the movie. And got the live performance again. I repeated the return and explained my situation to a sympathetic librarian, who placed a hold for me. Whereupon I got the live performance again. And again. So the fourth time I returned it, I begged a librarian to cancel my request. She vowed that this time, they would just purchase the actual movie and killed my hold. I think I got the live performance one more time after that. The actual movie finally was purchased and showed up as my hold - a couple of weeks after the vid was due. So I broke down and bought it well before that.
After all that build-up, the vid came together in the space of two days. I was torn between the Go-Gos "We Got the Beat" and "Rock This Town", music that was contemporary to the movie's release, and (ARGH) decided that "Rock This Town" fit the mood I wanted.
thingswithwings had requested "sweetness and silliness and slapstick and hamminess" and "Kevin Kline's Extremely Flexible Dancing. For reasons." This was not a hardship for me. But somewhere between my innocent childhood and making this, I realized how ridiculously slashy this movie was, with a pasted-on heteronormative ending. Sorry, ladies of Penzance! Kevin Kline and his amazing thigh-high boots and tights stole this vid. (Not sorry. :D)
I am so happy that even with my enormous faux pas, a bunch of enthusiastic people left wonderful comments on the original Dreamwidth post. Thank you for letting me know that you all found it as joyful and fun as I did.

Rock This Town Lyrics:
Well, my baby and me went out late Saturday night
I had my hair piled high and my baby just looked so right
Well-ell, pick you up at ten, gotta have you home at two
Mama don't know what I got in store for you
But that's all right, 'cause we're looking as cool as can be
Well, we found a little place that really didn't look half bad
I had a whiskey on the rocks, and changed half a dollar for the jukebox
Well-ell, I put a quarter right into that can, but all they played was disco, man
Come on, baby, baby, let's get out of here right away
We're gonna rock this town
Rock it inside out
We're gonna rock this town
Make 'em scream and shout
Let's rock, rock, rock, man, rock
We're gonna rock till we pop
We're gonna rock till we drop
We're gonna rock this town
Rock it inside out
(Rock it, rock right in!)
(Whoa!)
(Whoo!)
(Oh my god)
Whoo!
Well, we're having a ball just a-bopping on the big dance floor
Well, there's a real square cat, he looks a 1974
Well-ell, he looked at me once, he looked at me twice
Look at me again and there's a-gonna be fight
We're gonna rock this town
We're gonna rip this place apart
We're gonna rock this town
Rock it inside out
We're gonna rock this town
Make 'em scream and shout
Let's rock, rock, rock, man, rock
We're gonna rock till we pop
We're gonna rock till we drop
We're gonna rock this town
Rock this place apart
We're gonna rock this town
Rock it inside out
We're gonna rock this town
Make 'em scream and shout
Let's rock, rock, rock, man, rock
We're gonna rock till we pop
We're gonna rock till we drop
We're gonna rock this town
Rock it inside out
We're gonna rock this town
Rock it inside out
We're gonna rock this town
Rock it inside out
Whoo!
