It's here, at long last - my Hamilton week! I'm flying out to New York tomorrow and arriving about 5 PM, meeting up with [personal profile] heresluck and her friend for lunch on Wednesday and then seeing the "Hamilton" matinee, and then flying back home Thursday morning. (My visit was supposed to be a bit longer, but the airline changed my return flight to leave earlier, alas.) I am intending on visiting the Trinity Cemetery to see the Hamilton-related memorials, but other than that I have no firm goals. Maybe hit up Stub Hub for Wednesday night tickets? If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

I am trying not to have my usual travel freakout, but I still haven't packed yet. Being there less than 48 hours will hopefully lighten my load and my stress level.

We hosted the in-laws and my family for Easter yesterday, and it went off more smoothly than I could have hoped for; everything was delicious, everyone seemed happy, and no one brought up politics where I could hear. (My brother is a Fox News kind of guy, whereas my dad and I are crunchy liberals; things can get heated.) I took today off work for my birthday and travel prep, thankfully, because after everyone left yesterday I was too sore to do all the cleanup, so the leisurely pace has been wonderful. Bless my husband for doing an initial triage last night and running the dishwasher; it made round two of cleanup much easier.

The Emperor returns to school tomorrow after being off for Spring Break for the last week and a half; my lucky husband will have to deal with the inevitable homework grumbles until I get back.

HAMILTON!

Part the First - Thursday

(Having typed this out - um, evidently I'm in a really wordy mood. Sorry! I think splitting this into parts is probably a good idea.)

WOW. I had no right or expectation for this past weekend to work out as well as it did, but it did, and it was AMAZING.

My advice for anyone else pondering attending two cons at once: DON'T. Unless you get the amazing confluence of events that I had: they're less than two miles apart (crucial); you have a car (very necessary for even small distances on hot summer days); you have both schedules in hand in advance so you can map out a strategy (barely, as Creation waited until practically the last minute, whereas the Vividcon one was posted months ahead of time, and for that, I thank them); you have friends on both sides who don't mind if you sidle up next to them in line, allowing you to bypass some waiting (please forgive me); you have dedicated seating and/or the con is small enough to not need it; you can prioritize what you want to see, heave a heavy sigh for what you'll have to skip, and best of all, the Can't-Miss Events on both sides don't conflict with each other but instead dovetail beautifully. I cannot emphasize enough how lucky I was that everything I really wanted to do on either side came together perfectly. I could not have asked for a better schedule to accommodate both.

Thursday. At great length. )
grammarwoman: Painted poster of the Avengers (Avengers assemble!)
I am on day one of my first out-of-state business trip. Today started at 3:45 AM, in order to accommodate all the travel involved in getting here by 9 AM. I'm more loopy than tired, but this fully belly from dinner is definitely tipping me towards coma-land.

Even more decadent than the tuxedo chocolate mousse cake I got for desserty take-out is having this hotel room all to myself. The past several times I've stayed in hotels, I've shared a room with two to three other fangirls. I get to spread my crap all over the bathroom counter, put my computer on the desk, and toss my stuff on the other bed. Bliss! Of course, the company is paying for this, so I can't exactly get used to it. But I'm earning it back in intense brain use this week. Web unit testing, get in my head!

I am truly gobsmacked by the enthusiastic response to my Avengers story, especially at the AO3 link. In the 24 hours after first posting it, it got double the hits and kudos of my Losers story, which has been posted since January. It definitely motivates me to post the rest of my work there - the steady stream of kudos has been addictive! I am trying not to get obsessive about the hits to kudos ratio, and choosing to believe that every hit read all the way to the end and didn't back-button out.

Once I'm home again, I'm going to make a few small tweaks to my Avengers vid and get that posted, too. It's such dizzy fun to be back participating in a huge, ongoing fandom again!

I think I'm on that slippery slope between being exuberantly proud of my son and a little bit scared of what path his incipient geekhood is taking.

Exhibit A:

The pencil is mightier than the scalpel...I hope. )

I walked into daycare today at pick-up time to find the Emperor intently copying figures out of a book; said book, mind you, was open to graphic photos of a dissected alligator's stomach/intestines (see picture with careful subtitles) and heart/lungs. I can only guess by his other notes that the rest of the book was similarly specific. Is this the start of a medical career or a creepy fascination with vivisection? Only time will tell. Of course, it does have a certain Far Side cartoony factor to it, too...

This was balanced out just a few minutes ago by his call upstairs, where he had spread his blankets out on the floor, perfectly smooth, to have a snuggle with me. He even dug out a floppy toy frog so I'd have my own animal to cuddle, and his plush triceratops stood ready to guard us from bad guys. You can't fight that kind of cuteness.

This weekend we'll be traveling to the 'burbs to visit my folks and then attend a family get-together on my dad's side. I can't wait to hear what my dad (the Special Ed teacher) thinks of his genius grandson. *grin*

Then it's one week until the Chicago Stargate Creation con and [personal profile] darsynia! It will be Legen -

WAIT FOR IT -

DARY.

Greetings to friends old and new, especially my Shore Leave peeps!

I made it back to Richmond in excellent time. There was one egregious gaper's block right around DC (ooo! Bright shiny lights! Must slow down to gawk!), but that only took 20 minutes or so to clear up. Since my arrival, I have been most excellently fed and allowed to babble on. Luckily, my hosting friends are Firefly fans, so at least the Jewel Staite stories had some relevance.

I haven't even tried to see how backed up my flist is at this point; I'm guessing it's going to be a matter of several weeks to straighten it all out.

So anyway, feel free to tell me the important news I may have missed since Wednesday night. Oh, and Shore Leavers? If you're reading this, I'm hoping to get at least a sampling of stuff up tomorrow night when I'm back home, but in the meantime, if you want to leave a note here, that would be awesomestupendous, as I've got a bad case of swiss cheese brain, the holes of which most of your names have slipped through. (Obviously, I'll never forget my roomies! And the friending helped, too. *grin*)

Man, I am so tempted to take Tuesday off as well, just to recover. Perhaps I should start practicing my fake sick cough now. *coff*coff* Hm.

G'night, everybody!
