Kickstarter and LeVar Burton have found a great way to make Seth MacFarlane be a force for good in the world: donate now to the Bring Back Reading Rainbow Kickstarter, and he'll match all contributions until they hit 5 million (only 320 grand and 38 hours from now!). There are a ton of different levels and rewards; go check them out!

Cut for recent news about MZB - sorry for not doing it before )

The recent SCOTUS decision to let Hobby Lobby dictate their employees' insurance coverage didn't help either. Can't we find a good balance of knowing when to butt in (child abuse) and when to butt out (women's health)? ARGH.

I have been lucky enough to never have suffered major depressive episodes, but I think the example phrases listed at Make It OK, on how to talk with people about their mental illnesses, can apply to lots of situations. (I've heard several variations of the "Don't Say" examples from well-meaning people when talking about my infertility.)

I've known and enjoyed the happenstance that Luke Skywalker voices the Joker. But the fact that Mark Hamill is now the same age as Alec Guinness was when he played Obi Wan Kenobi in "Star Wars"? MIND BLOWN.

And now I pay for the fact that I stayed up late to watch "Teen Wolf"; I still have to prep a dish to bring for tomorrow's work potluck. *sigh* G'night, everyone.

No, I'm not at all avoiding working on this intensely boring test plan. Why do you ask?

I have no idea who decided that non-fuzzy bear versions (Bearbrick? Sounds like a cutesy version of bareback to me.) of Kirk and Uhura were necessary, but here they are:

Can't spell bears without ears )

If you can explain this to me, please do.

This planned version of a vinyl figurine of David Tennant's Doctor Who seems to place great emphasis on his, ah, groinal region:

It's the pelvic thrust that really drives them insane )

Between the framing of the area with his unbuttoned suit jacket, and the dark lining of the coat pointing like an up arrow and the bottom triangle of the bright red tie pointing right down, the figure would seem to be smirking "The sonic screwdriver is my penis." Big Chief's conditional warning that Note: actual product may vary from shown. Pending licensor approval. means it's not final, of course, but I'm actually kind of fascinated with the product as it is.

In other news, who knew Almanzo Wilder was such a hottie? Good going, Laura!

A little bit Hemsworth of a Farmer Boy, maybe? )

*sigh* Damn. That test plan didn't magically finish itself. Guess I should actually do some work.

Yesterday was the Emperor's 6th birthday. It had extra resonance for me, seeing as he was born on a Tuesday, and he's passed the kid milestone of Starting School. I may have gotten a little weepy on my husband last night.

School is continuing to be a challenge for him. He got 8 stars Monday and 12 out of 14 stars yesterday, mainly because he was the Big Cheese for the day because of his birthday. Then he got written up in the after-school program for hitting a kid. *sigh* But then he was awesome at the capoeira Halloween party, so he came full circle.

Birthday party! )

Geek cake emergency! )

I built a light saber - can I be a Jedi now? )

Nature kicks nurture's ass )

My parents are visiting this weekend, so I'm fighting off panic mode when I glare at the crap stacks around my house. There is so much paperwork and assorted stuff coming home from kindergarten that I'm getting really annoyed, especially since a lot of it is time-sensitive documents that need feedback and/or signatures from us. I'd shove it all in my to-do pile, but that's already precariously tall and something I avoid for weeks on end. His school should not be giving us homework! At least I have a menu and some activities planned - more grownup points for me! I plan on being partially fueled by candy to power my way through cleaning and prepping the next several days.

Really, how is October almost over? Didn't we just start September last week?

Man, it's only been a few days, and I don't even remember who linked this: Reunion of the Rikers, where Marina Sirtis and Jonathan Frakes sit around and have the most wonderfully breezy chat about a sitcom starring Riker and Troi and what they'd be like at home, and their romantic journey through the series and movies. It had me giggling almost the whole time.

On the other end of the spectrum...Just today, several people posted about Joe Flanigan's piece on Martin Firrell's site. But what I found most fascinating there was Kate Mulgrew's contributions. This ballsy lady went in and told TPTB that she thought it would undermine Janeway's position to be having sex, that she believed Janeway went through more than the previous captains by having her life stripped away, so she instead concentrated on guiding her crew. Most of all, when she mentioned she was 39 when she started, it blew me away - that's only a couple of years older than I am now, and I can't imagine having attained by then such gravitas, such dignified calm as she displayed. If I ever were to meet her, I would love to shake her hand.

I slept much better last night after that post of woes.  Silly old brain.  Apologies as usual for the dump and post.

It's no news to anyone, I'm sure, that the internet is a scary, skeevy, screwy place.  Let's see....

Exhibit ANew Star Wars Disney Figures Coming Soon.  Now, I'm as big a fan of the crossover as anyone, and that Mickey/Yoda statue is kinda cute, and carbon-freezing him is an excellent way to get Donald to STFU already, but...Really.  You had to put Minnie in the Slave!Leia costume?  Gross, guys.  Just gross.

Exhibit BThe Cuchini Pad, for disguising that pesky case of camel toe.  (Now with celebrity examples!)  This chirpy ad proclaims "No bush, no cush!" and offers this solution to those addicted to Brazilian wax jobs and not wearing underwear with their tight pants.  I don't even know where to begin.

Exhibit C:  When you're tired of ratting your hair to ludicrous heights, turn to Bumpits!  I saw this on TV and could have sworn it was a fake SNL commercial.  Do they not realize how ridiculous the demonstrated hairstyles look?  Or, as usual, am I just hopelessly out of touch with today's fashions?  (See Exhibit B.)

Exhibit D: Color blind, or just color foolish?  You be the judge.  I had to do the copy, paste, zoom myself just to make sure that aqua = aqua.

Exhibit E: Little Love This Summer for A-List ActorsHollywood and movies: the same old new thing. )

And finally, news that got my fangirl heart beating very fast:  Chris Pine will sing and have an actual vocal offering on the soundtrack to the upcoming Small Town Saturday Night.  SQUEEEEEE!  (You didn't really need those eardrums, did you?)

And on that note - happy Friday everyone, and for those of you in the US, enjoy our national holiday dedicated to summer fun and colorful explosions!

(I know we're long past Christmas here - this was prompted by the long-overdue DL of pictures from my camera to the computer.)

In my family, any interests you develop inevitably result in similarly-themed Christmas ornaments.  Since I've been a sci-fi and fantasy kind of girl for a very long time, this means I've racked up a lot of Star Wars, Star Trek, and celestial ornaments over the years.

Sometime after I moved out on my own, I decided to devote a tabletop tree entirely to my crazy collection and proudly labeled it the Space Battle Tree.  (It couldn't be anything less with that many spaceships from that many sources!)  Over the years, my collection has only grown, and now it has a full-size (though skinny) tree.  The ornaments in boxes take up one full tote, with another couple partial totes for the lights and sundries.
Many, many pieces of geeky evidence )

I love my tree.  It's one of the top reasons why I look forward to Christmas every year.

(Apologies for running so far behind on these. I've been more scatterbrained than usual...)

I’ve never been to a Creation con before. I’ve heard random comments that they’re expensive (HOLY CRAP YES) and not the most fan-friendly (which I can see), but I have to give them high marks for organization. Events started generally within five minutes or so of the posted schedule, and photo-ops and signatures moved along like clockwork, unfortunately at the expense of any interaction with the celebrity guests beyond “Hi!”.
Saturday: The First Half )

More later on Marina Sirtis and Jonathan Frakes...
