can't get me out of my head

It has been a "...so that happened" string of events since my last gasp of posting "regularly".
The kid finished 8th grade and is moving on to high school next year. He got three weeks of different music camps in June, and is now teening as hard as he can by staying up late, sleeping even later, and spending all his time on the computer in the basement until marching band starts up in August.
The husband is still comfortable not job hunting, but at least he finally got set up with unemployment. We are holding steady with the financials, boosted somewhat by my raise and ongoing frugality, but gosh is it wearing thin. :|
I am firmly in the grip of Niantic's phone apps "Pokemon Go" and "Harry Potter: Wizards Unite". Damn them and their uncanny grasp of what makes my amygdala pop. I did get to attend GoFest in Chicago with friends, which was fun, but now I'm in the recovery stage in between Exciting Events! and trying to peel back their deathgrip on my attention span.
Since both of those apps reward walking, I have been very put out about the swampy local weather; it has been 80+ percent humidity and degrees for weeks, and I am beyond done with it. Today is the first break we've had where it doesn't feel like walking into a sauna when I leave my house, and I want to push pause and keep it like this for a nice long time. Bless my central AC, and curse the electricity bill.
Now that the list of backyard disruptions appears to be conquered (sewer repaired, fence replaced, patio repoured, grass regrown), I can finally get out and garden again, which is another reason I'm annoyed with the weather: marinating in my own sweat while I try to work outside is not a great sensation. The raspberries have returned from their razing last summer with a delicious bounty, though unfortunately the Asian beetles came back as well (my bushes are no place for their ongoing coitus and consumption!). I've gotten a few tomatoes and beans, too; really the only good reason for summer is fresh produce, I think, because the sun and heat are not my friends. I'm looking forward to seeing if last year's Halloween pumpkin seeds produce any offspring.
The big news, like big big BIG news, is that we got a dog! Well, I got a dog, and the husband plays with her occasionally, and the kid is reacting like a spoiled only child having his territory invaded and staying as far from the dog as possible. The pup in question is named Maisie; she's a Lab/Shepherd mix, almost a year old, skinny and lanky like a teenager, and still likes to playchomp on people like we're chewtoys. I'm hoping to get her into training classes soon, but the local person recommended by friends won't have openings for another couple of months. I've been in the stage of wanting a dog for so long that now that I have one, reality is crashing back in with a vengeance - for the most part (aside from the chomping) she's a good girl and a sweetheart (she's stretched out and snoozing in her bed next to me), but she can destuffinate and desqueakify a toy like the existence of the fluff personally offends her, which means a lot of cleanup, and she has a bad habit of surfing the counters for unguarded food. One night when I was out running errands, she got her front paws on the stove and managed to knock a knob to turn on the gas. *SIGH* I crated her the next time I was out, but the husband (who has his den in the garage and is effectively not in the house) is such a softie that he let her loose after less than an hour. So I've purchased baby proofing gadgets for the stove knobs, and we're trying to get better about not having anything of interest on the counters, in hopes that we can leave her alone for a few hours.
One of the things this means is that I/we probably won't be taking any trips for a while. I was already waffling towards "No" about attending Fanworks (it overlaps with the first day of high school for the kid, and with the distance, I would spend almost a day just traveling to and fro, with not much time left for attendance). Now, though, that is right out, which makes me disappointed about all the fannish time I'll missing. I'm hoping Maisie calms down soon so I can duck out for a weekend visit here and there with nearby friends.
In fannish news, I'm delighted by the widespread squee for Good Omens. I've loved that book for approximately forever, and I think they did an amazing job adapting it; I even got both my boys to sit down and watch it, and they enjoyed it as well. (Serendipitously, the kid has been on a Queen kick for months, and the husband is a big Pratchett fan.) The explosion of fanworks for it has been delicious - all the fic and vids and meta! I love everyone in this bar. :)
I was less enthused by MCU's Endgame, though the fixit fic has been numerous and appreciated; I had my own ideas, which may just stay in my head. I definitely need to break out of my rut and get creating again, whether that be vids or fic or SOMETHING. Maybe I'll ramp up by posting more -
sunshine_challenge has some interesting prompts.
