The Vancouver con was fun! It wasn't the concentrated giddiness of the Minneapolis con, but neither was it the introverted loneliness of pre-fangirl, Hewlett Harem, con attendance.

Highlights:

Kate Hewlett is gorgeous and funny, and a sweetheart, but not good with phone technology. It took her a couple tries for her to capture on her phone the audience greeting to her boyfriend.

David Hewlett is also gorgeous and funny and AWESOME, and gestures manically even at 8:30 in the morning when he's informed at the last minute of an event that's been scheduled for months. Oh Creation, never change.

The insanity and hilarity of the David Hewlett/Joe Flanigan tag team is somewhat diluted when Paul McGillion is added to the mix. (Sorry, Paul!) There was no throwing of Timbits this year, but Joe did feed David some.

Jewel Staite does not actually like strawberries. So all you Kaylee fans who are trying hard: bring her wine instead. I was...less than impressed by her panel; I think she came off as too polished and even jaded, especially coming right after the Flanigan/Hewlett/McGillion trio. (Sorry, Jewel!)

30 Helens agree (or simply a large portion of the people I talked to): a Staite/McGillion, Doctor/Doctor panel would have been better.

Chris Judge gets many gold stars for being righteously angry on behalf of US women under the constant political siege against our rights. I could have kissed him. I also learned that he came up with Teal'c's "Indeed" because he thought replying "Yes" to people sounded too Earth-centric, and that the writers invented kelnoreem for him because he kept falling asleep during takes from being an out-all-night party guy.

Lou Diamond Phillips gives great panel, especially since this was only his second fan convention. He is not Hispanic/Latino, nor does he speak Spanish, though he keeps getting cast that way and can do a credible accent; he's actually Filipino (among others). I asked him about "Wolf Lake" and got a great, thoughtful answer, including that part of the reason for its quick demise was that it premiered right after 9/11. Spoilers for a show that got canceled a decade ago: his character was going to be revealed as an werewolf who had never gone through the change.

Dan Payne and Alex Zahara make for a fabulous panel pair, in turns funny, snarky, serious, thoughtful, and full of great stories about working in the industry, both in and out of makeup. Plus, Dan Payne made his pecs dance for Kate Hewlett. *thumbs-up from me*

However, getting there (and back) was decidedly NOT half the fun. My layover in Detroit was more of a runover, due to a late takeoff on the first leg. Then getting out of Vancouver (hello, every single red light!) and Canada (the radio LIED about the truck stop taking 5-10 minutes - it was more like 40-45 minutes) was aggressive in its passive retention. I barely got on that plane, too, but I had to giggle when I saw that my seatmate was a pilot, as Kate Hewlett had mentioned having a similar WTF experience on her recent trip.

Then my phone battery died when I arrived, which was evidently contagious, as my car battery was dead as well. :( Luckily, my brother-in-law was available and local to give my car a jump, so I finally got on my way. Home had not been spared the bad luck; the main shower's valve broke and was only fixable by breaking into the wall (luckily accessible from opposite the tile side), plus a $500 bill from the plumber. That, added to the husband staying home from work Monday to get the fix accomplished, along with $100 for a new car battery yesterday morning, meant that they spent almost as much money as I did.

One of these days, I will attend a con, and there will be NO DRAMA. At least the Emperor and the dog got fed in my absence, and school was attended. They both missed me a lot, which warmed my heart.

I am still gobsmackingly tired. It did not help when I stepped into an online discussion today, trying to point out the insulting nature of "a little bit pregnant" and how pregnancy is not a binary condition, to counteract a whole lot of mansplaining. I thought I was done with crying at work. *sigh*

Next up: my vid!

I <3 Dan Payne and Alex Zahara! They are so much fun!

I'm sad that David and Joe never got to go to Gatecon b/c I think they'd have been a lot of fun.

I won't go into my thoughts on McGillion. *eyeroll*

Glad you had a good time despite some of the not-so-good parts!
