Friday at VanCon 2011

Being a fangirl on vacation is so liberating. I've been assured multiple times by the husband that he and the Emperor are doing fine, so I'm attempting to quash the guilt of abandoning my parental post and enjoy this tourist abroad thing to the fullest extent.

I've taken goofy pictures out of car windows, snapped the required shot of McKay Avenue outside the hotel, and asked newbie questions about the money. Hello, Canada!

I saw David Nykl and Patrick Currie last night, both of whom were very charming and funny. I missed taking shots of the latter, but did get some great ones of Nykl.







and one that makes me laugh. I wish I could remember what he was saying!





I'm skipping Alex Zahara (bad fangirl!), and lounging until it's time for Andee Frizzell, and later on Kavan Smith. I have to ration out the quiet, as tomorrow is going to be a busy day.

If you've been to one of Alex's panels before... ooookay.... otherwise - OMGNO! Alex is awesome!

And don't be afraid to bump into him in the hallways n' stuff (unless the con staff really really discourages that sort of thing - all cons are different) - b/c he loves chatting w/ fans! *g*

And Andee is awesome too! Remind me to tell you the Gatecon volunteer autograph pseudo-session story! *g*

I did catch the end of Alex's panel - he was very smart and funny. Andee is a madwoman; I love watching her in action.

So what's the Gatecon story? Inquiring minds want to know! *grin*

So, the Andee Gatecon autograph story...

not a long story, but when the volunteers were having their T-shirts autographed, she was telling them to 'bow' before the queen - meaning, bend over the table so she could sign the shirt upside-down. =) It was pretty funny watching volunteers be 'shoved' face-first across the table for her to, more or less, sign their asses. XD

Eric Avari had his own twist - he just said 'Have I done you yet?', then followed that with 'Bend over bitch.' (( and I think he said it to any and all volunteers - male, female, etc )) aka: we. had. fun. XD

Oh my! That must have been a trip. I could totally see her doing that...but not at a Creation con. ;)

Um, no, never anything that awesome at Creation. (( I've heard they don't even let the actors *look* at the fans as they're filing by for autographs - from a pretty reliable source. ))

I won't rant about Creation and why I won't go - suffice to say, money is a large part, but other things factor in.

However - v. v. glad you had a good time! *jealous of the Sheppard and McKay meetings!* (( could care the hell less about McGillion tho - omg rude and a dramaqueen ))

Oh, if they're not making money off of it, Creation will do their damnedest to discourage it. It's one of the reasons I love David Hewlett so much - he doesn't rush the fan experience during signings and such.

I wish that Creation didn't have such a hard lock on the Stargate convention experience! I know the actors appear at other cons, but not as often.

And I kinda have to agree with you about McGillion; he didn't detract from the experience, but he did rather dilute it.

Yeah, unfortunately, Creation has the rights to the Stargate franchise as far as conventions go. And, from what I understand, they have some strict and ridiculous 'rules' about where/when/how often the actors, etc can attend non-Creation events. It's ridiculous.

I can totally see Hewlett snubbing the rules! I'm rather disappointed we never managed to snag him for Gatecon though. :(

McGillion - he was rude to me every time I spoke to him at Gatecon - which was as infrequently as my volunteer duties required. I am *not* a fan. Mostly, he acted like he was as popular as Richard Dean Anderson and that he should be treated like him too. Seriously, dude? Get a life. You are a 2-bit actor and a PITA to work with.

RDA, OTOH, was an absolute delight to watch through the entire con in '08! I have never seen anyone have so much fun! He scared the shit out of us a couple times b/c he wanted to 'be like all the other kids (actors)', but we could see he was totally enjoying the experience. =)

Hewlett has said multiple times that he's a geeky fan himself, and if he weren't an actor appearing at them, he'd be on our side, so he's all about making it a great experience.

That's disappointing about McGillion, and yet not surprising. But I love that RDA was so into it! He's one that I would definitely enjoy seeing, but I don't know if I ever will.

Yeah - RDA *might* be working his way back into some of the con circuit... doubtful that he'd do anything like Creation, b/c he likes interacting with the people, from what I could tell. He was much more reserved when he was doing photos and autos, but at the auction, he was having a blast! So, I think he'd enjoy something with a more 'approachable' feel than the cattle-call Creation stuff.

Hewlett's not the only 'fan boy' on the 'actor' side. *g* Lots of 'em are and they are so much fun to hang with when that's an option. We always had someone chillin' with us - Colin Cunningham, Eric Avari, Dan Payne, Alex Zahara - they'd just hang like they were part of the con-attendees. *g*

I believe RDA is doing Chevron this year, dunno about anything else.

I love it when the celebs see cons as a fun event and not a paying job that they're barely tolerating!
