Friday I'm in Love (with VVC)

It's been almost two weeks since my massive con weekend - can I still remember what happened? Let's see...
Friday morning reaffirmed my decision to stay at the VVC hotel, as the roommates had sleepy morning banter and then breakfast in the hotel lobby. Mmmm, free breakfast. Since I didn't have to attend the moderator training, I got to leisurely take my time eating and chatting - that never happens at home.
Then it was off to the Welcome and Raffle panel. There were so many familiar faces in the crowd! I may finally stop feeling like such an utter n000b. Alas that I didn't win anything, but to be completely cheesy about it, getting to attend was such a gift anyway.
Next came the history of Challenge, with so many fantastic vids, like the hilariously historical Walking on the Ground by
flummery (the mind-boggling amount of work they put into this resulted in a treasure for the rest of us), and the brutal one-two Firefly punch of
bradcpu's Tear You Apart and
lierdumoa's How Much is That Geisha in the Window?, plus
sisabet and
sweetestdrain's On the Prowl, which I adore so much for going from the hurt/comfort starting line and flooring it past uncomfortable right into the OMG TOO MUCH zone. Every time I watch the vid, I try to set my own "This is the limit of what revs me up" point, and I swear it shifts each time, even as it shoves that whole enjoyment in my face and says "Think about your choices!". It is such a perfect blend of idea, song, and source. GUH. (The making-of commentary is priceless as well.)
I also got to witness
kass's flailing at finally seeing with a large crowd on a big screen the infamous cat!preg phenomenon of I Swear, courtesy of
dualbunny,
trelkez, and
sweetestdrain, and then
kass's shock and awe at closing out the show with her own phenomenal Not Done With My Changes. (Still so gorgeous and evocative!)
(Side note: it's taken me about two hours and 30 open tabs to write the section above. It's like I fell into tvtropes or something! [Warning: do not fall into tvtropes. It will eat your day.])
So then came actual decision time, the hardest part of VVC: vids or panels? Choosing the first slot was easy enough, because as much as I wanted to see on the big screen several of the vids in the Glitterguts vidshow, I can't take straight-up horror, and any "Nightmare on Elm Street" offerings are Right Out. (Seriously. I saw pieces of one of those at a sleepover decades ago, and that MF Freddy still invades my waking and dreaming thoughts. DO NOT WANT.) IDIC it was, then, and as usual when it comes to VVC panels, I'm glad I went. There were so many interesting offerings and a great behind-the-scenes peek at making videogame vids. (I'd go into more detail, but
kass already did a great job here.)
I wound up at lunch with my roomies and
riverlight, with delicious Chicken Pad Thai (sorry, had to wipe up the drool there) and, bowing under pressure, Thai iced coffee. (You all are pushers, don't even front.) The fact that it was very tasty is beside the point. Or something.
Lunch went a little overlong, so we got back to the hotel mid-session. I snuck into the Worlds Collide vidshow with the others, figuring that would be less of a disruption than barging into
sisabet's Chill the Fuck Out panel (even as I wanted her hand-holding on how to do that very thing). But really, I couldn't complain about watching the vidshow, getting to see
jarrow's emotional and gritty Wretches and Kings and
charmax's dynamic Unnatural Selection (I rewatch this one so much!) on the big screen, and viewing
heresluck's full-of-feels The Test for the first time.
How much do I love the VVC DVDs? So very, very much, especially when I knew that I could duck out on the Nearly New vids and see them later, in favor of the excellent Song Choice panel run by
absolutedestiny. I enjoyed every part of it, from his vid crafting pyramid, to the detailed analysis of how he chose and edited the song for I Enjoy Being a Girl, to others' experiences with finding perfect songs and then giving them away.
Since I was in a song frame of mind, and because I wanted some insight for when I get around to remastering my Avengers vid, I attended
nestra and
heresluck's Audio Editing panel. There was lots of good food for thought;
heresluck's explanation and worksheet of how the Dandy Warhols' "We Used To Be Friends" was distilled into the Veronica Mars credits music (which I grinned at, considering my Club Vivid entry that was upcoming) will be quite useful for future vidding efforts.
I took the dinner break as an opportunity to slip out and go get registered for the Creation Con just two miles down the road. I lingered a little too long chatting with friends and had to pay $10 to get out of the parking lot. It was still cheaper than staying at the hotel the whole weekend, so I tried to shrug it off.
I hurried back to get gussied up for Club Vivid, one of my favorite events of the con, if not the whole year. I shimmied into my TARDIS dress, accessorized and glammed up, slapped on my blinking lantern hat and open-bar wristband, and sallied forth. The buffet spread was absolutely delicious and made me very happy to have skipped dinner. I also feasted on all the compliments my dress got; so many people stopped to tell me how much they loved my outfit that I had a permagrin pressed into my cheeks. You all are so awesome! Even the amazing bartender Mandy requested a picture with me; you know you've done well when the person who makes your drinks wants to pose with you. :)
Here's a pic of slightly sweaty but oh-so-proud me:

Then it was time to get down and DANCE. So many great vids! So many fanpeople on the floor shaking their respective booties! I kept an eye on the list as I gulped down drinks, trying to build up a safe, fuzzy buffer for when my vid showed. I got more and more nervous, looking at all the amazing action vids, with great movement and clipping and song choice and so on. It got to the point that I was just worried if anyone would dance to mine.
The moment arrived, the "CLUB VIVID PREMIERE" card exploded, and my first ever Vividcon submission Black Tongue played on the big screens. People danced. Nobody threw up. I counted it as a win, and moved on.
When Club Vivid drew to a close, I was actually in the overflow room chatting with people, including
taraljc, who got my attention when she started proclaiming her affection for fonts. (DUDE! I love fonts too!) Then I found out her pro identity and squeed a little - OK, a ridiculous amount - all over her, only to find out once again just how small the world is (we actually have friends in common).
I staggered back to the room to kick off my killer shoes, and joined up with
kass to visit
norah in her room. I had bought several bottles of 3 buck Chuck at Trader Joe's the previous day, but found myself without a corkscrew. Luckily,
heresluck had one, and wine was served along with
norah's amazing mini-buffet. (There were grown-up serving dishes of meats, cheeses, crackers, and fruit, and spreaders and everything!)
There is almost as nothing as good for the introverted fangirl's soul as quality time spent talking with an small group of others of like minds about anything and everything. Even if I had a neutral time the rest of the weekend, I would still attend Vividcon for conversations like that. Thank you, ladies, for letting me into your group.
We stayed up waaaay too late, and finally decamped to let
norah to have her room back. I rinsed off my face and poured myself into bed, very happy with the day's events.
To be continued with Saturday, someday...
