amnisias, for Festivids 2012. The request was for a vid focusing on Watts. I really hope you like it! I got swamped with sickness, holiday shenanigans, and various other time sucks, but I love this movie and Watts, and *fingers crossed* that that sentiment comes through.
This is my favorite John Hughes movie from the 80s, really truly. I think of it as "Pretty in Pink" with the right ending, not to mention that Lea Thompson is way more vibrant of a potential love interest than Andrew "Blane the Bland" McCarthy. Plus, for everyone who's ever been in unrequited love, The Kiss That Kills is an amazing piece of wish fulfillment, and a vivid demonstration of chemistry in action. :)
But what really grabbed me in this movie was Mary Stuart Masterson's epic face. Watts goes from sneers to casual shrugs to heartbreaking openness in seconds, always letting you see what's going on in her complex emotional soundtrack without leaving the other characters any wiser. The way she grips her drumsticks like a security blanket gets me every time. The movie may try to frame Keith as the main character, but to me, she was the star. I imprinted so hard on Watts' fashion sense (among other things) that I don't think I ever realized it or got over it. I wore so many vests in high school, and I still think knee length, rolled-up jean shorts are the bomb.
Last year for Festivids, it took me the longest time to find a song for my Jake 2.0 assignment. This time around, I at least had a theme I was going for, but for all the songs about unrequited love and love triangles, the majority of them seem to frame the narrator as a powerless victim, helpless to change what's happening and content to pine from a distance. I wanted something with an active voice, someone who realizes that the situation sucks, but that she still has options and a life to lead with or without that desired partner. I already had Robyn in my music rotation, but coming across "Who's That Girl" in a list of songs in the general theme, I realized immediately how perfect it was, with the driving drumbeat, the 80s retro sound, and Robyn's defiant insistence on remaining true to herself no matter the cost. It all screamed "Watts" to me. Judging from the comments on the original Festivids posts on Dreamwidth and Livejournal, it suited a lot of other people as well. :)

Lyrics:
"Who's That Girl"
Good girls are pretty like all the time
I'm just pretty some of the time
Good girls are happy and satisfied
I won't stop asking until I die
I just can't deal with the rules
I can't take the pressure
It's got me saying ooh, yeah...
Who's that girl that you dream of?
Who's that girl that you think you love?
Who's that girl, well I'm nothing like her
I know there's no such girl
I swear I can't take the pressure
Who's that girl?
Good girls don't say no or ask you why
I won't let you love me until you really try
Good girls are sexy like everyday
I'm only sexy when I say it's okay
I just can't deal with the rules
I can't take the pressure, oh no
It's got me saying ooh, yeah...
Who's that girl that you dream of?
Who's that girl that you think you love?
Who's that girl, what if I'm nothing like her
I know there's no such girl
I swear I can't take the pressure
Who's that girl?
Let's play a game that you've never tried
You be the girl and I'll be the guy
Let's pretend everything has changed, and then
Would you love me any different?
I just can't deal with the rules
I can't take the pressure, oh no
Who's that girl?
Who's that girl that you dream of?
Who's that girl that you think you love?
Who's that girl, what if I'm nothing like her
I know there's no such girl
I swear I can't take the pressure
Who's that girl?
Who's that girl?
Who's that girl that you dream of?
Who's that girl that you think you love?
Who's that girl, what if I'm nothing like her
I know there's no such girl
I swear I can't take the pressure
Who's that girl?
