I was completely excited when it was announced a few years back that The True Meaning of Smekday was being made into a movie. I hadn't heard much in the interim until I read a mention of it in the recent Entertainment Weekly.

So this brilliant story, narrated by a biracial preteen, about how Earth was invaded by aliens twice and her subsequent cross-country trip with one of the aliens, with an attention-grabbing title that is easily searchable?

Has been simply named Home. Aside from naming it "The", I don't know how they could have come up with a more generic name.

I really hope it was a clusterfuck failure on the part of marketing, and not (as my husband suggested) the author's distancing himself from the end results. (There's a trailer here. I...don't know how to feel about that. The official movie website is not confidence-inducing, either.)

I mean, I realize some sacrifices had to be made to bring it to the screen (J.Lo is now "Oh", for example). But WHY would you take away that distinctive name?

Here's hoping they keep the plucky young heroine's story front and center, and ease up on the wacky alien antics.

ETA: OK, This trailer makes me feel a little better. I'm loving Rihanna's voice acting for Tip. Jim Parson's Oh may take a little longer to grow on me, if only because I enjoyed the narrator's voice for the Smekday audiobook - J.Lo/Oh should sound more alien!
