Five things for Friday

I am grossly overdue for the five things meme as suggested by [livejournal.com profile] darsynia. (Since it was never explicitly defined, I'm regarding these as five things she either associates with me or explanations of which she'd like to see me stumble through.)

So for her edification, and anyone else's who cares to read:

Humor
Given my fondness for cheesy movies (I blame it on watching lots of unsupervised cable during the 80s, a pre-PC era known for teen flicks and broad comedies, which permanently imprinted me on gems like "The Pirate Movie" and "Grease 2"), I suppose it would be fair to say that I don't always have the most discriminating or consistent sense of humor. I love Kevin Smith, Monty Python, and Mel Brooks, but I loathe star comedy vehicles that feature actors like Will Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Chris Farley and such. Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller are on the fence.

I'm not really the type to laugh easily. In the infrequent cases when I'm overtaken by literal fits of LOL, I find myself laughing until I'm either crying or coughing, or sometimes both. I can't tell you what triggers them, but I do know they get further fueled by the dumbfounded stares of people, wondering what on earth could be that funny.

I also come from a family that's mercilessly sarcastic. Since my earliest days, I've found it keeps people guessing if they're not sure if I'm serious in what I'm saying, so my default delivery is ironic drawl. In online communication, though, I'm almost never without my default *grin*.

stern face of awesome power
I'm…not sure what this means. Do I have a stern face of awesome power? Do I respect the stern face of awesome power? I suppose yes and yes. I perfected the Librarian Look (grimly glaring over the tops of my glasses) at an early age (the glasses had to be good for something), and well, I'm a mom. I think the Stern Face gets issued to you along with the birth certificate.

SGA!
OK, to start with, *GRIN*.

SGA as a show, but more importantly a fandom, has been a endless source of happiness and delight for me. I resisted it at first, as I saw it as a petulant younger sibling of SG-1, the show I was enraptured with by the addition of Ben Browder and Claudia Black (one of the best decisions TPTB ever made). Then I started catching SGA as it re-ran after SG-1, and I was intrigued. Then someone posted a link to [livejournal.com profile] mklutz's Stargate Pimp Post, which led me to SGA fic. The rest was porn-laden, love-smitten history.

I've met some amazing, wonderful people along the way, and had some of the best times of my life, like meeting a ton of like-minded fangirls at Shore Leave. I may have dabbled my toes in online fandom before, but SGA was such a warm, welcoming, talented, mostly drama-free experience that I am forever spoiled for fandoms to come.

TPTB in their crackheadedness might have killed our show, but they can never touch our love for the characters.

the emperor
For those who haven't heard me tell this story a thousand times already…at one of my ultrasound appointments around seven months into my pregnancy, the tech showed us a clear shot of the player-to-be-gendered-later's head. My husband took one look at the huge dome and proudly declared, "Now that's the skull of an Emperor!" Thus, a nickname was born. Two months later, the actual Emperor was born a week late by c-section, at a mighty 10 pounds, 3 ounces, and 22.5 inches long. He didn't look so much like a newborn as a several-months-old baby. I think we've been playing catch-up ever since.

I'm hopelessly fond of my little geek-in-training. He's brilliant and funny and loving, and indisputably a product of his father's line, aside from the horrible eyesight he got straight from me. He's starting to watch the same media that his parents love, like Futurama and Star Wars. On his worst days, he drives me so crazy I'm tempted to Craigslist him. In the good times, he's so sweet he melts my heart. In either case, he keeps us on our toes, especially now as we're struggling through a particularly angry/stubborn/aggressive phase. I really hope it's just an immaturity problem of his early 4s and not a nefarious Condition. Time will tell.

multitasking
I used to think I was skilled at multitasking. Then I realized that I'm just good at maintaining the list of "Stuff to be Done" in my head; it's not so multitasking as very fast task-switching. I am hopeless at checking my LJ and watching TV at the same time, or reading a book and keeping up with a conversation.

But I am a queen at list-keeping, boy howdy.

Happy Friday, everybody!
