Monday in name only

Seriously, for a Monday, today was beyond tolerable and well into satisfactory.

The Emperor got up and about this morning with almost no fuss, giving me an extra 15 minutes to take it easy during the usual bustle of getting ready. Heaven knows it will probably be a unique experience, but I treasured it all the same. I even got to work on time! It's lovely to start off the day without the panic of "crap, I'm late AGAIN".

I think I'm finally *knock on plastic wood veneer of desk surface* done with the data import part of this project, an end to 3 weeks of constant checking and tweaking. Normally, I enjoy that sort of thing, but this was dragging on way too long, and it totally blew past the allotted time. Of course, I didn't get too far in coding, what with the constant "Hey! Guess what we didn't think about" things that keep surfacing. *headdesk*

However, the Dagoba xocolatl bar was not a wise choice. I know the Aztecs were crazy for the spicy/sweet confection, and I do loves me some dark chocolate, but this particular combination was unsettling and almost queasy-making. I'm going to try to finish it in installments, mainly because I don't have any back-ups (I allow myself a strict portion after lunch every day, so it has to be Good Stuff), and in my personal afterlife, you get scolded for all the chocolate you waste. (Dammit, Trader Joe's, come to town already! With your delectable chocolate and guacamole and cereal bars and goat cheese and everything, we would spend a good deal of our regular grocery budget in your fine establishment.)

I'm currently trying to quell the nervous twinges that always herald a family visit. The Emperor's birthday is this weekend (HOW THE HELL IS HE FOUR YEARS OLD?), and both sets of grandparents and assorted aunts/uncles/cousins should be in attendance. This means the house has to be clean, DAMMIT, and since my usual help went and got himself a proper Job (YAY!), it's all after-hours and weekend work from now on. I spent a hour laboring to get the stove clean, and it will take even longer to get the bathrooms and counter tops similarly sparkling.

It's rather disheartening when you start with a clean kitchen, and one pesto party later (when we harvest all our basil before it freezes), it's trashed again. But hey - yummy pesto.

But..the best news is - Bye Bye Binky! We've been gently prepping the Emperor for this day for a while, shamelessly relying on the "You're a big boy now, and big boys don't need binkies" strategy. I finally got up the gumption this past weekend and, one fat bribe of a new barrel of Tinkertoys later, he is officially sans his pacifier. (True story on how we should be scared for the fate of the world that will topple under his devastating cuteness and cunning: I asked him what kind of present he would like as a reward for giving up his binky. He looked at me with a sideways smile, and I kid you not, said "Maybe a pacifier?" *DED*) It went over much, much better than the elimination of the binky during naptime. He tried to make some logical case for his mouth being empty while sleeping and how bad this would be (there was some earnest talk about how his teeth would break or something), but we ruthlessly pointed out that neither his parents nor his idol, Cousin H., have binkies at night, and how we sleep just fine. He grumbled, but acquiesced.

Oh, and just to top off this ramble...a link from [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight. As she put it, Presidential politics as a D&D campaign. The campaigners campaign and complain. [livejournal.com profile] samwize and [livejournal.com profile] garrity, you two especially should check this out.

And now I really must be going.

We're also having people over for Caitlin's birthday this weekend. We're trying to keep it low key.

Nah, just practical. Since Cait is at a new school, we decided to skip the friend party. I just couldn't thing of a fair way of doing it without inviting 35 kids.

Oh hell no, you aren't. Four-year-olds do not need everyone on the gods' earth at their birthdays! They don't really give a crap anyway. I once read a guideline that the party should have guests to match the kid's age, plus one. Seems like a reasonable number to me, at least until you get into real school and there start to be social consequences from who gets invited where.

I am with you on this - YUCK. I bought my hubby a Dagoba bar this summer as a joke and he *loved* it. o_O Now we have to look for it every time we go grocery shopping.

Cleaning for the grand-parents??!

You've GOT to be kidding!

Armed with Oust and some garbage bags/laundry baskets, one is 15-minutes from Party-Time :-)

Wish 5 more cousins and 2 more aunts could descend upon the pesto!!!

If you still need help eating that chocolate, I'm right here. :) I loves me some spicy chocolate.
