Catching up with [personal profile] grammarwoman...

Catching up with my flist after a weekend is a fun, but long, task, especially with all the recent additions of "gosh, I love your writing" people. (That is, people whose writing I love, not the other way around.) So yeah, that's done, and I thought I'd braindump the random bits I've collected for the past week or so.

I've been working on my eating habits and actually trying to pin down why I put things in my mouth. It's a little maddening that I haven't done this long past, because all too often the answer is not "Because I'm hungry", but instead "I'm bored" or "I need a treat" or "I want to be chewing on something" (oral fixation, yep) or "I want to be tasting something sweet" (...you all have dirty minds.) Between that and being slightly busier at work, I'm managed to cut way back on the snacking. Now to conquer that deadly period between arriving home and dinner.

While I continue to love and adore my DVR and kick myself for not having gotten it long past, it does have one huge drawback -- I find myself obligated to watch the things I've set to record. I'm almost completely unable to just delete things without viewing them. So instead of going outside for a walk or working on the job hunt or any number of other useful things, I find myself plopped down in front of the TV. Again. Some more. At least with most shows having finished their seasonal runs, the unwatched stuff isn't piling up as fast. Now I just have to be stern with myself that Useful Things must be happening at the same time as TV watching.

Because vidding is a scary hobby that I'm afraid to get into, I want someone to make me a BSG relationshippy vid set to Cake's "Love You Madly" and use the scenes of Apollo's hallucinations about sliding under the surface of the water. That way, the idea will stop haunting my brain.

For [livejournal.com profile] samwize, a bumpersticker that I saw recently that I thought you'd appreciate: "Don't pray in my school and I won't think in your church".

The Emperor has been on a movie kick again, burning through a lot of Pixar offerings. I think "Toy Story 2" may be better for wee kids than "Toy Story" -- the latter has some weird/scary parts with the toys' revenge against Sid, as well as a lot of toy violence. I'm probably a bad mommy, anyway, for letting him watch them.

Is Aaron Douglas, AKA Chief Tyrol from BSG, married? I just read an interview with him from a year ago where he mentioned his wife, but a while back I heard a podcast where he’s soliciting BJs in his hotel room, so...Yeah. My brain wonders in mysterious ways.

Hi, my name is [livejournal.com profile] grammarwoman, and I love porny fanfic. And porny RPF. Because my brain was broken in my youth by softcore cable offerings and bodice-rippers, and I was writing pornfic in my head (starring me and various others, natch) before I had even heard the terms "fanfic" or "Mary Sue". What has this to do with anything? Um...got any links you want to share? *grin*

I totally understand the DVR devotion. I didn't rent a movie for about 6 months after we got Tivo because I felt guilty for watching something that costs money instead of the stuff in the queue. All I can tell you is that eventually it will pass. Summer repeats help.

Having cable for a weekend, and seeing Enik and myself totally devolve into Gigantic Couch Slugs from the Planet Frito, I have decided that, not only will the six-month T.V. fast definitely happen, but when it's over, I think that we're going to have go get a rabbit-eared 1953 Philco, or nothing.

All this DVR and HD stuff just translates to "Chia Watching 'The Most Dangerous Catch' Instead of Actually Having a Life". And Enik is worse.

I got over my "must watch" dvr impulses by abandoning almost all subscriptions, and instead requiring myself to consciously hand-pick every episode of everything I wanted to watch. This really helped me narrow down what I'm actually interested in spending time watching. For the stuff I really want to see, I've got no problem remembering to record it (and double and triple check that it's set up to record, I'm looking at you BSG.) But then, there's a lot of stuff I thought I really wanted to see, but for the most part I don't care enough to frequently queue them up; most cartoons that I "love" fall into this category, and while I could have enough subscriptions to fill my dvr with hours of new cartoons every week, I'm lucky if I remember to nab South Park these days.

For the subscriptions I did keep, I capped them at a very low episode count, so for instance, there's always a couple eps of The Daily Show waiting for me, but there's ONLY a couple eps of The Daily Show waiting for me. Having one or two shows lined up in this manner keeps me from thinking there's not enough on my dvr, for those times when I've gone a whole month without recording anything and I just want to kill an hour.

Anyway, I'm getting rid of my dvr when I move to my new place in a couple weeks; cable is too expensive for a single person household. I'd pretty much stopped using it anyway once BSG finished up for the season.

Watch TV while on the treadmill? That is what I do. :D And I still have 5 hours of Law & Order: SVU, 5 hours of Desperate Housewives and 5 hours of Brothers & Sisters recorded and waiting. We just don't have time to watch TV these days when the baby wants to go, go, go.

Whereas I have my own unique watching issues. I'm utterly and completely divorced from the network's time and place. I am Shifted. :D

I find I tend to watch shows in blocks. I'll start at the beginning and watch to the end, then pick a different one. So, I just finished Dr. Who. I'll prolly keep up for the two-three eps left in the season. Then I'll move on to the Sopranos.
